Kuching - Pontianak

Hi,

I will spend 2 days in Kuching (Sarawak, Borneo) soon and would like to do a quick rent-a-car drive over the border - direction Pontianak - coming back the same day.

Do you have a good recommendation on what to see along that road or in that area?

Many thanks,

Hi Travelbug, I've done the trip a few times, but most recent is about 6 years ago. It would be a nice ride on a GS, but frankly not the best of car rides. Also you had better check if a rental is allowed to go into Indonesia from Kuching, I thnk not.

Pontianak and back can not be done in a day, which is a shame because just north of Pontianak is the "Katalistwa" equater which is a nice thing to cross by road. Singkawang could be done (maybe) in a day, its a beach resort for both Malays from Kuching and Indonesians from Pontiank, its north of Pontianak and south west from Kuching, about half way between the two.

As the topography is prety flat in the whole of West Kalimantan they is not much in the way of views to be had. Roads are generally bad, pot holes etc.

Frankly I would not bother, best to stay in Sarawak and drive around there, maybe head for Miri? If you go into Indonesia you'll just see a lot of jungle. One day just is not enough to get anywhere.

Hi Deaninkl,

thank you for your information.

This basically confirms what I have (not) found on the web: nothing much to see in that area.

I'll probably just do a quick border run for the fun of it, but I won't bother about finding any sights on the Indonesian side.

Cheers,
