IRan, more than 250cc allowed

Hi folks,

a friend of mine got an official note with his carnet, that motorcycles with more than 250cc are no longer allowed to cross Iran.

Does anyone know more?

Thanks for your help

Dirk

I think 250+ cc bikes have been forbidden for a while in Iran, nobody seems to have told the border officials about this though. Generally the police have turned a blind eye(they have 1150cc BMWs in Tehran) towards foreigners. I was pulled up in Tehran for not wearing a helmet, the cop mentioned my bike was illegal, but I guess he decided it was too much of a hassle and sent me on my way. I guess you'll just have to try it and see, I haven't heard of anyone having major troubles.

thanx for the info. it d be a major change if iran was not accepting at all over 250 cc bikes and should really be confirmed.

until now, iran people are not allowed to have/own/drive over 200 cc bikes. only the police are and they have a bmw rep. in tehran (nouriani company).
you can see a few rare big bikes in the second hand shops, where they sell tyres for example.
but temporary import of big bikes by foreigners (tourists) is allowed, with the carnet de passages en douane.

has it changed recently ?

Hi Sean and Vincent,
that's what my post was about. I experienced what you decribed in 2003 and 2004 in Iran.

Now this friend of mine received a letter in which he was told that there's a new law on temporary import of mc bigger than 250 cc.

But maybe the law is one thing and border practise is something different.

Thanks anyway

Hi, We crossed into Iran from Turkey last week on 1150GS no problems, with carnet. No info on our carnet about no bikes over 250cc. Been pulled over a few times by police but most just are nosey and want to know where we are from and look at the bike. Doubt you would have any problems and there was no metion of it at the border.
Cheers, Steve

Hi

We passed through the Armenian border into Iran five days ago on our 600s, no problem. We also happened to meet some local bikers in Tabriz, One who was riding on a 1000cc Kawasaki with a 200cc badge, no problems.

Yes, more than 250cc is STILL FORBIDDEN in Iran!

I honestly think the local guys you meet driving on 1000cc had some connections with police or "higher people".

But for tourists it's no problem if having Carnet. So don't worry.

Hi to all.
We crossed into Iran on 28th Sept with no problems at all on a 650GS and 1200GS. The border officials were great and we were through within the hour. People here also very friendly. Don't be put off by others

Currently in southern Iran on 1100GS - no problem. Locals can have bigger than 250cc with a special licence apparently.

2016 status on 250cc bikes through Iran

Just resurrecting this thread as colleagues are hearing that this limit of riding over 250cc bikes into and through Iran is being enforced.
Does anyone have experience of this or more info?
Any ways around it? Special licence or carnet? Other?
Many thanks.

We just came from Iran and met many travelers on big bikes. I dont think there is a rule like this for foreigners.

Thread date is 2005 and this rule was for locals..
Nop as long as you have the carnet thing.(though there are some local guys for illegal entrance without carnet).
If you ever get such an inf.,dont believe travel agent lies which are for getting the visa code for your name against a commission and except GB, USA. and CAN. citizens who must get an escort at the entrance gate via the local travel agent..

All the best.
