India visa: in country extensions, is it possible

I have taken longer than planned to get near to India (currently in the UAE) and so the remaining time on my India visa won't give me the time I want to explore India. I was assuming I could happily ride into India and pick up a visa extension on the way. But have just read in very tiny, blurred print, on the bottom of my visa the words: "Tourist visa non-extendable" which seems pretty clear.

I quick search brings up some old related threads:

and this article:

Does anyone have any uptodate information on getting a visa extension (ideally another 6 months) while in the country, or am I best to apply for another visa while out of the country which I think can be done in the UAE though I need to find where and how...

My info is not up to date, but things in India change rarely...

Do NOT enter without time on your visa. Get a new six month visa while outside.

The Indian government is trying to discourage foreign tourists having extended stays in the country. New visas are rarely issued within the state - even Nepal can be a problem.

Have a look at the lonely planet boards for the latest.

Cheers Simon, a visit to the Indian Embassy here in Dubai informed me that I can not have a 6 month visa only a 3 month visa (at a special cost of 200 Dirhams - bit under 30quid) and it will take 3 working days (though I will allow 10 to be sure!)

So when it gets a bit nearer my leaving date I will go back to the Embassy and start the ball rolling.
