India, Amritsar: spare parts / workshop

Hi!

Can anybody recommend a workshop / motorcycle shop in Amritsar, where we might be able to get
- a 525-chain with at least 118 units
- front sprockets for a XL700 (same as XL600/650 and XRV 650/African Twin).
- tires 130/90-17 and 100/90-19

The chain is urgent. Sprockets and tires are nice to have.

Has any body experience, if it is possible to order these things in Dehli (to Amritsar) and how long it might take?

Thanks in advance & greetings from Ladakh!

Panny

Whatever you do, stay away from the KTM workshop in Amritsar. They will tell you they can get parts / fix your bike but they can't. My bike was there for 2 weeks, I got them all the parts from Dubai and they still couldn't fix it (had to get my bike to Delhi on the back of a truck...). I did get some parts sent from Delhi to Amritsar by a mate based in Delhi. It does work but can take a while. They promissed overnight but it took 5 days... Good luck!

Hi Jeroen,

thanks for the advice! Most welcome as usual.
I´m not surprised, that they where not able to repair your bike, since they have nothing but the 200ccm Duke. If you work each day on the same modell...

We wasted a whole day going from mc-dealer to mc-dealer: usually they asked for which motorcycle brand is was and didn´t understand that chains are not brand-typical. Really frustrating.
Meanwhile I think there´s no 525-chain in a proper length available in this city. :confused1:

Maybe we are more lucky in Lahore (PK)...

Cheers

Hi Panny,
Chains of all sizes and lengths are available in Lahore as long as you know where to look for. Don't worry.

I can recommend Shumail!
He really made some efforts to help us -> finally got us parts from GB in decent time.

Warning: stay away from Hi-Speed (Zafar Usman Khan).
The guy was recommended by some local HUBB-member and turned out to be a cheater! Tried to sell us a used chain for new + other negative things.

Cheers

Friendly talking as usual...

I think thats the matter of the power of shops and not the personality.
Even in İstanbul, you can get 10 different prices for the same product in the same street.Or you pay for the cost of experience when you try to solve a problem yourself..

What I know is they are all nice, sincere local friends and try to be helpfull honestly with all the possibilities they have..wish were available all around the world for the spirit of adventure travellers and power of bikers without borders..

Approved many times each year..
My turkish friends İsmail and Murat 2 years ago,2 Turkish cyclists last year and 3 cyclists this year, Hakan and Şandan this year, plus more than 30 European bikers this summer have got great friendly support by local bikers in Lahore.I read same opinions in their blogs.

On the other side, saying half of the glass is full always will make us more powerfull against problems we or the following bikers will meet at similar points..

Better we leave positive footprints behind and let friendships be forever..

All the best..

I think we should refrain from getting unnecessarily involved in petty politics of local business competitors.

I disagree.
This is about sharing experiences. And both recommendations and warning about cheaters are interesting for other members.

You feel "unnecessarily involved in petty politics of local business competitors".
Maybe you are indeed involved?

Cheers

If somebody tries to sell a used chain for new it´s fraud and not "nice, sincere local friends...".
If I wouldn´t have noticed the clenched link, he would have gone through with it.
Even when I nailed him to the point he said, it had zero kilometes.

Chain market in Lahore

You appear to have gotten offended by my post Fanny, although it wasn’t intended. I don’t think we ever met or even anyone from our club MAP “Motorcyclists Association of Pakistan” met you.

For the benefit of members let me inform that there is a big specialized market for chains on the famous Branderath road of Lahore where you can get all types and sizes for a fraction of price the bike dealers sell them for. I routinely buy O Ring chains for my dirt bikes there.

This was in my mind when I solaced you not to worry about chains while you were in India. Had you been referred to the right place you might have saved quite some time along with resources.

There are 2 popular inexpensive hotels in Lahore and I find them fighting on international forums absolutely unnecessarily and feared the same thing starting here.

BTW I have never visited any of them.

Omar

Hi Omar,

several local bikers tried to help us search for a proper chain.
All of them failed, though most of them told us the same "don´t worry, no problem to get it" stuff like you at the beginning.
At least it was not possible to get a NEW 525 chain in Lahore.
Maybe you are talking about small size chains or about used ones?

By the way: one, who really made a lot of efforts to help us was the president of PBC and yes: we met MAP-members, too.

Cheers

Panny

Hi Panny,
Without getting into unnecessary discussion about availability of chains in Lahore as you have left, I am glad you had a pleasant stay in Pakistan and wish you a great trip.

Cheers
Omar
