Hiring a bike in Nam

Can someone offer any information in regards to hiring motorbikes in Ho Chi Minh Vietnam. Looking for Minsk or bigger (Honda Baja 250 would be perfect) for a period of 4+ weeks. The questions are: what bike, where from and how much? The trip is starting on the last week of December.

Thanks in advance..

Khaled

Hi,

We live in Ho Chi Minh City.

As far as i've learned the market, the rental will have to be rather 'opportunistic'. i.e. you go to the dealers when you arrive, and you choose from what they have at hand.
There is a cc ban in Vietnam, and nothing should go above 150cc, but it is still possible to find a 250 here and there, either very old, or with fake i.d. and labels saying 150. (for example we owned a Honda XR150..)

Let us know if we can be of any further assistance,

Guy and Marie

Hi Guy and Marie,

I am coming to Ho Chi Minh City for a Uni study tour in July and was told that there is a lot of good priced riding gear over there for sale. Can you give me any tips as to where i should look when there?
Also going to spend 2 weeks travelling around and was hoping to do some of that on a bike so any suggestions as to tour co's or "can't miss" destinations would also be appreciated.

Thanks
Chris

riding gear

I was there around Xmas and couldn't find anything. I know it is all made there as well. Problem was; all the locals don't wear riding gear so it's all just shipped to Europe etc.. There were a few jackets etc but weren't up to what you can get back home. I suggest buying draggin jeans stuff if you aren't planning on any mud plugging as it's light and you can pack it in your stuff easily. buy pads to add to them.

No personal experience, but two of my colleagues have taken trips to 'Nam. One was turned back at the border on his 250cc. Wnet back to the last town and stored it, then went back to the border where he rented a 125cc and roade for three weeks. The other friend flew there, and rented a 125cc for the whole summer vacation. His main complaint was the the conditinof the raod. I wil contact some friends inVietnam and ask them directly and get back to this same spot with what I can get.

Thanks martync and Hindu..

Martyn - am hoping to do some riding around during the short time i have there but heard that the KTM jackets (similar to the BMW ones) were made there so rather than taking my draggins etc from home was hoping to pick up a few bargains whilst there :mchappy: was wondering how hard it would be cos as you said I'm sure the locals wear shorts and thongs.

Hindu - that would be great if you can point me in the right direction...

Thanks for your comments guys..

Chris
