HELP, Caf's broken arm

Hi all,
We are shacked up in Gilgit on the KKH at the moment for a few days while we arrange to get Caf's motorcycle shipped to Mumbai.
She had a head on with a car and is now sporting a broken arm !
We need to get it from Gilgit to Mumbai as cheaply as possible, it's looking like no air freight from here so overland to Islamabad and then air to Mumbai, does anybody have any details of a crate builder in Islamabad or any other info that may help ?

Thanks in advance
Pete & Caf

Cool, Caf is going to have her arm re-x-rayed tomorrow morning and hopefully the permanent plaster put on !
I'm off down to the airport to see if there are any freight forwarders, so if your about in the afternoon we could catch up for a beer !!!!!!!!!! We were told it was available down your end of town ( we're up the other end in Horizons Guest House).
Is there anywhere selling wheelie suit cases down there? Can't see her getting on a plane with two ali boxes.

Cheers
Pete & Caf

I would suggest you to Truck it to Lahore. Later when you cross the border (20miles) truck it from Amritsar to wherever in India you want to. This would be much cheaper and convenient. If you want, I can get you the contacts of Indian Bikers who might be able to help.
For any other help please feel free to call me.
Please pay my regards to Caf.

Omar,
Many thanks, that plan is making sense, if we truck to Lahore can you recommend somewhere to store the motorcycle while I ride down to meet it, about five days ?
Any help from the guys over in India would be much appreciated.
I'll let Caf know you sent your regards, they had to re break her arm today under general anesthetic, she's sleeping it of but feels a bit beaten up at the moment.
We're having problems with our phones, and can only txt for some reason, hence the post.

Cheers
Pete & Caf

We have hatched a plan !
I leave Tuesday and ride to Islamabad (3 days) Caf flies from Gilgit to Islamabad and arrives Friday afternoon, she then goes bus from Islamabad to Lahore Saturday morning and I ride. The bike leaves Gilgit on a truck Wednesday and arrives in Lahore Saturday, bikes and us stay in Lahore Saturday night and possibly Sunday.
Truck with Caf and Bike to Wagah, me ride then push the bike and Caf over border, she taxi to Amritsar, me ride, leave my bike in Amritsar, taxi back to border, pick up Caf's and ride back.
Several days in Amritsar to sort bike forwarding to Mumbai, she flies to Mumbai to finish her convalesing while I spend 2 weeks catching her up by riding from Amritsar to Mumbai.
Make sense guys or have we missed something ?

Cheers
Pete & Caf (now awake and sort of making sense)

Just an opinion: Never depart anywhere before the rest of your belongings (in this case Caf's bike). If you've already left town, the trucker/shipping company can mess you around/demand extra fees etc. I would be riding my bike behind the truck that's carrying Caf's bike, just to make sure it arrives.

Good luck,
Chris

Thanks for the input Chris, but Caf is leaving 2 days after the bike so can see it on it's way, the guys we are staying with are putting the bike in the back of there minibus (they run a trekking/tour company)and driving straight to Lahore including night driving in a caravan along the KKH so to follow them on the bike is not an option. I agree with everything you said but think we have the next best thing?

Cheers
Pete

SOme stuff that might help

Hi there,

Don't know if this will help, but maybe.

When we were going from Islamabad to Amritsar my wife was also in a bad way with stomach issues. We stayed just on the India side of the border the night, after watching the border ceremony, there is a cheap ish hotel there, where I think we paid 800 Indian Rupees a night. They don't sell beer, so get it from duty free if you need one!

But, then in Amritsar we needed luxury and stayed at the Ritz plaza for 40GBP a night. It's a little out of town, but you can get a rickshaw for 50 rups to town. It has a SWIMMING POOL and when we were there, for two days, we never saw a sole by it. The food there is not too expensive, given the hotel price, and they also have wifi. Might be the treat you need at that point.

Hope Caf is well and good luck. We are going to be in Goa soon for a month or so, let us know if you end up that far south.

Cheers

Mumbai

Oh and we're in Mmbai now ... not sure how that helps. It is a HUGE sprawling city as far as I can figure, Delhi seemed much easier to navigate. Hotel prices seem expensive here, but maybe you are a better negotiator that us. We are heading to a hospital tomorrow for blood tests etc, let us know if you need a report. It's in the Northern suburbs so easy to get too

Hi Pete and Caff,
My address is,
288 Cavalry ground, Street 6, Lahore Cant. You can store your bike at my place. My wife and 4 children join me in inviting Caf to stay with us while waiting for you. Nothing lavish but full of warmth.
I drove Gilgit/ Islamabad on my 150cc bike in 1.5 days and my younger friends did it in a single day. It shouldnt take you that long either. I would also recommend you to get a second opinion from a good orthpaedic surgeon in Lahore.
Take care

Hi Pete and Caff,

I just arrived in Gilgit today (coming from China) and heard of you at the guest house. If it weren't for some oil leaks on my KTM I'd leave for Islamabad tmr, but the day after is more likely. Anyways, I'll be taking the same route as you then, and if there's anything I can help with, let me know.

Hope you'll be back on the bike soon!

Everyone seems to be having a bad time of it lately, illnesses and injuries. Just read another post of someone who wiped out on KKH a few weeks back and had to go home, and there was a terrible story on ADV rider of someone who met a worse fate in South America. Hope that you work everything out.
