GPS in India

I’ve just found such post:

Andy Pog a UK citizen traveling in India was arrested this week for using a Satellite phone while in India. You must have special permission to use your phone if you are carrying one or you face 4 years in jail.

Satellite phone is forbidden in India
What about GPS ???

I use Open Street map wich workes for the long distances well and remember even a good streetmap of a city does not guarantee that it is conform the reality. Sometimes easier to spend 100 Rs and ask a motorriksja to guide you to your destination and when you leave a big town, do that early morning when the roads are empty.(Indians like to sleep late) and ask every now and then somebody for directions (straight sir and then left). We did this many times with succes.

We're also using open street maps on a Garmin, as metita said its good for long distances, but you do need to review the route before driving, for example when we were driving from rajasthan towards Bombay the GPS calculated us a route inland adding an extra 100 miles or so.

When i looked as to why this happened its seemed the maps were unable to route aboute 500m of the main high way.

Apart from that it the maps work well to get you place to place.

Just make sure you have a paper map with you too.
