Good News for travel to Iran!?

I've just been told by tourist information in Tabriz, Iran, that as of four days ago overland travellers coming from Turkey, Azerbaijan, Syria, etc can collect an extendable 15 day tourist visa at the border. This even includes Americans!(But not Israelis).
The source seems reliable and says he had spoken to a friend at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who confirmed it.
Don't take my word for it, check with Iranian embassy at home or MFA in Tehran. Sounds like good news though.
NB. I understand travellers coming from Pakistan still need a blood test(we had to get one, which was a shock) to get a visa, so you need to check for the procedure from there
PS. The Turkey border is open again.

Wonky, This seems to be getting some credibility, also refer to http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb...ML/000744.html

I also did a quick search on Iran Daily website and found this -

Visas at Borders
TEHRAN, Jan. 16--Visas will be issued for foreign nationals at border checkpoints, the cabinet’s Information Department announced on Monday.
The ratification, which permits 15-day visas for foreign nationals applying at the borders, is based on Article 138 of the constitution and the appendix of Article 2 of the Law for the Entry and Stay of Foreign Nationals in Iran passed in 1969, IRNA reported.
The visa duration can be extended to a month and further extension will require the Interior Ministry’s approval.
The ministries of interior and foreign affairs were notified of the ratification on Saturday, which is aimed at facilitating the travel of foreign tourists in order to boost Iran’s tourism sector.

However I contacted the Iran Consulate in Australia and they say I can only get transit visa at the border and since I cannot get visa in Aus (because it will expire before I get to Iran), then I must apply at another embassy (for me - Turkey).

So still some contradictory advice around.

John
