Goldwing to Thailand

Hi all.
I want to ship my old Goldwing to Thailand and am not 100% which is the best way to go about it.

It's easy enough to get it out of UK to Thailand, but does anyone have any idea regarding import taxes etc?

I was told to send it stripped down as if it were a scrap bike to avoid the import duty, I'm not too sure about this - is anyone?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

PS: it will be stopping there permanently, my wife is Thai and we have a place in Thailand.

There are very high luxury goods import taxes on vehicles/bikes, so the most economical way to go about it, especially if you can strip the bike yourself, is indeed to take it apart and send it in pieces and declare it used parts/scrap parts.

If you have questions on the specifics of getting the bike registered etc, a good place to ask is Motorcycle Touring & Maps: Thailand : Laos : Golden Triangle (and its forum). You'll find a lot of ride reports and other south-east asia bike specifics there too.

That's a useful page and links.

A few other things come to mind: sea freight can mean trouble, as in having to pay bribes to corrupt officials. Air freight for peace of mind.

Having spent a year in Thailand I doubt you will be happy riding such a heavy bike there, especially if it has a fairing (heat!). Consider saving money and hassles and buy a bike locally.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
