From India to Laos or Thailand...

Common problem as it seems: try to "escape" from India by the road. I should be in India for the next few months, but I am trying to anticipate the "after", namely Laos or thailand. As you all know, there is a quite problematic country to cross. Driving will obviously be difficult, but I am considering other solutions (truck, train, whatever...). Any feed back about this area? Has anyone found an option that would not include plane nor boat?
Thanks!

India is connected by land with Laos and Thailand, so understandably many overland-travellers would like to do it by road.

But with Burma being practically closed for foreign vehicles, China very, very complicated and expensive to go to (nevermind crossing such a large portion of the whole country!) and the highest mountain chain on the planet, as well as the Tibetan high plateau lying between India and China, very few actually do it.

If you mean transporting your bike by train or truck, I fail to see the point. Would probably be much easier to freight it onwards from India, then spend a few weeks backpacking through the areas that are complicated to go to with the bike, then go meet it at the other end.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
