Delhi to Dublin

Hello,

I'm an Irish guy currently in Bangkok and I am thinking about flying to Delhi, buying an Enfield and driving it home. This has been a dream of mine for quite some time.

My main concern are the borders. The route I plan to take is India - Pakistan - Iran - Turkey and then up through Europe. I have found a good deal of information about doing the trip but very little of it is recent. I understand the situation surrounding these borders can change quite quickly.

Has anyone done this route recently? If so how did you go about getting the visas sorted out? Did you need a carnet?

I recently drove a Honda Win down through Vietnam and across Cambodia without a single issue ( aside from the bike breaking down ). When I did research online before that trip the advice I received was overwhelming negative ( admittedly I didn't look on this site too much ). I understand that was small potatoes compared to this trip and simply rocking up to the border would be much harder to pull off.

Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.

If you don't allready have your visas for Pak/Iran, you can forget the whole story as they are not available in S E Asia. You would have to return to your home country first and even then, it's not easy !

Oh cool ...another ride home on a Royal Enfield thread..!

Yes...you need a Carnet for Iran and Pakistan, no way around it, and apparently there's no way to get one of those in India .
Also, have you considered what you would do once you were back in Europe, with a bike that is likely to be impossible to register and use back home?

On top of that, it is not clear whether foreigners are at present being allowed into Baluchistan Province in Pakistan (necessary to get into Iran).

Maybe consider flying to Central Asia and buying a bike out there, in Bishkek say, and riding that back. You would have none of the problems mentioned about (so long as you could make do with a Russian transit visa, or go via the Caucasus).

I know this is totally not what you're looking for, but if you ever just want to ship an Enfield home from India to Ireland I've got an Indian friend that works in the shipping industry, and he's the sort of guy that would be only to happy to help with any questions or assistance. If all you want is to have an Enfield in Ireland, you can buy one in England and ride it back, no problem.
Probably cheaper and the bike will allready have all the mods to make it road legal in UK !!!

I think calling it "easy" might be a bit misleading, but where there's a will there's a way..... and it would be good to know that "way".

I'd love to know how your friend solved the Carnet + Baluchistan + Visas problems ( and maybe tell us what he did with the bike once it was in europe)
