Customs on having parts shipped to India

How can I get parts for my bike and maybe a few personal travel necessaries shipped from family in the US to India without paying Indian taxes or the items getting stuck in customs? Is there some way to declare the shipment as containing only personal items for a US citizen on travel in India so that they are treated the same as any other item I brought with me when I crossed the border?

I know that undervaluing a shipment can help avoid customs hangups but I was hoping for a more official and hopefully consistently enforced approach. Friends of ours have had shipments as unremarkable and small as a small box of contact lenses and a swimsuit held for (high) ransom by customs in Turkey and Russia. On the other hand we've had two, undervalued tires shipped to Turkey without hassle.

Thanks for any ideas.

Ask your embassy for permission to use their adress as delivery adress. If your parts are delivered to the embassy it will be regarded as diplomatic stuff and you don't pay taxes.

As far as parts and Customs Duty, I suggest removing them from their original packaging, smearing with some dirty oil, applying fingerprints and repack them in different packaging and declaring them as 'Used automotive parts'.
