Chinese requirement to ride in China

Hello everyone,
I believe you need just 2 documents to ride in China
Chinese plates (even temp ones)What colour are they?
Chinese drivers license.

Can anyone provide info on who issues them?

If there are agencies doing it im sure there is someplace issuing them. Im working on an alternative way of getting this dumb papers. But knowing who issues them would be very very helpful.

I would appreciate any replies on this question.

Thanks in advance

G'Day,

in your listing above you forgot the mandatory "Chinese Guide" and the daily $$costs$$ involved.

Best Regards, Seeya in the pub or on the road....

Hi all,

About how much does a Chinese guide cost per day?
I guess the group must also pay the food and the hotel for the guide also?

What if the group only consists of motor bikes, where would the Chinese guide be then?

I just did China's Yunnan province. The guide didn't hire an escort car or anything. He hop on our bikes as pillion. We were stop by police once but they only asked for our provisional Chinese driving license. That's all.

travelling through China

Dear all,
I am also very much interested in finding a cheap way how to cross China from West to East on the silkroad. My investigations show that 1 biker pays around € 10.000 when using a guide with vehicle for 3 weeks whereas 1 biker pays around € 3.000 when taking the guide as passenger on his own bike. The cost get down to almost € 1000 when there are 4 bikers or cars and only 1 guide. The price always includes all fees and cost for guide + his hotels as well as Chinese driving license and Chinese number plates but never includes the price for own accomodation and gasoline and other road and travel cost. My goal is to go from Kirgistan to Mongolia in September 2012 and I desperately watch out for companions. Lets go together!

Might find it difficult to find a guide who is prepared to travel on the back of a bike especially those distances.

As that famous Chinese quote goes"I'd rather cry in the back of a BMW than ride a bike"

Hi All,

Well if you can all wait for about 15 months, then my Chinese partner will be offering the guide, the registration of both vehicle and driver / rider.
Part way through the course now.
The general rule is that the group need to transport the guide, this will not be a requirement in this case, as the guide and support person (driver) will travel in their own Land Cruiser, which should also be available to carry the additional fuel required by so many motor bikers.

Looking at some of the prices being quoted, really makes me cringe.
As an "off the top of the head" I guess the prices quoted could seriously be slashed in half, and the tour guide, still make a "nice little earner"
At the moment, it literally is "highway robbery"

Hi bigdamo,
yeah, she has the connections, the guanxi as we call it here in China.
She has her own 2005 LC already.

Hi Aoraki,

It's still a long way off yet.
When she has finished the course, I will see (chat) to Grant about advertising.
For now, I would rather not step on any one's toes.

Hi All,
Actually it looks like mine good fortune. I have been in China and Tibet with my own Africa Twin 6 years ago. I did it alone with Chinese visa in my passport only. No guides, no plates, no money for nothing. The only gate I can recommend is Druzhba (Kazakhstan). This is a very small crossing used by trucks and trains from Kaz to Urumqi. People never had seen a tourists before I appeared there. I would have a spare choice in cause of doing it again. I am not sure if it is working now or closed. Now I am planning my next trip to Australia through Southern Asia. That is why I think about the China again.

Alex
