My British friend and I are planning a trip to Thailand from London next May and make it to Istanbul within 2 months. We plan to take our time and enjoy eastern Europe. My DL 1000 is Canadian registered and my friends Africa Twin is British registered. I understand the carnets are only good for 1 year only. We plan on storing the bikes for 2 months (to go back to work) before resuming the trip through Iran/Pak/India and Nepal and then fly the bikes to Bangkok . My question is: Does anyone know if we can get a carnet in Istanbul for the above mentioned countries or do they need to be from the country of residence and registration?

There is a heap of information on Carnets on the HUBB.
You can extend your carnet by contacting the issuer(usually your local Automobile Club) about 6 to 8 weeks before it expires. They will then courier you updated documents. That is what I will be doing as I may be away for longer than 12 months. |

Hi there,
I had to face your same trouble, planning my trip to India, last august. as far i know, the carnet it have to be issued by the local automobil club of your country, where the bike it has registered. a suggestion, try to get into Iran from The youksekova border post (south East of Van lake). it is smaller but faster then the bigger and crowdy Bazargan. i went through it on a friday, place was almost empty, and we passover in one hour and half (both sides). get more info about fuel restriction. at that time, the rule was running on, and we had to spend half a day, to buy a couple of cards each (we where two bikes). go to the oil company offices ask it for, pay it for (40€ each) then ride to the gas station let the card slide in the pump slot, refuel the tank and pay the amount. and ride safe! |
