Cambodia vehicle imports
 

Hello!!

I've heard a lot of different (and very complicated) things about this process and the costs involved.

Could someone please help me tackle the following questions:

1. What the import tax rates are based on (age, value, engine size?) ...how do I calculate the costs myself?

2. What is the process?

3. Can I simply drive a vehicle (on Australian plates) across the border and deal with it later?

4. If I decide not to legally import the vehicle, but simply to put on some fake plates instead and just tell the police I've "left the registration card at home" every time they stop me, what are the chances they'll ever find out. ...bearing in mind the vehicle I have in mind is one that is commonly seen in Cambodia.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!!

I lived more than a year in Cambodia and just drove across the sothern border (Thailand - Cambodia) of Koh Kong. They did not bother with any registration of the bike. Also on the border (Thailand - Cambodia) of Poipet they don´t care at all. I had no registration but just a home made numberplate and drove all over cambodia with the bike. I was never asked for some registration paper by the police or any other government organisation. They just ask for money if they manage to stop you. They very rarely managed to do so with me. Just drive they want shoot you. ;) So, it´s no problem. No worries...

We just crossed from Laos into Cambodia. We had a carnet so they preferred to just stamp that. No fee to customs.

we are 3 italian bikers entering in cambodia many times in north south and from Thailand.Now our bikes are in parking near Poipet.
Custom never ask us carnet or bike papers.I have ask some stamp but they say:go bikes are free.For exit to Laos,last february we have payed "10$ fine " each.
go in cambodia ,it is very easy bye robertos

Now we are planning for next october drive in Laos ,than China and Nepal.
We are looking for people to share the guide and car cost.
Any one ?

I brought my AUS registered KLR 650 to Cambodia and was looking to keep the bike in Cambodia for a while.I paid the Cambodian import tax of us$528 to keep the bike here indefinitely and the process was managed without hassle by Crown Relocations in Phnom Penh.
This may not suit everyone but it is an option.

In December 2013 I rode my 2008 ktm 690 into Cambodia from Thailand in Piopet. They were holding 2 guys from Singapore at the border because they did not have "correct import paperwork".

We went into the customs office and they tried to tell us that we could not enter with out the customs documents.

Our reply was "well, give us the documents and we will fill them out".
"You had to get them from our government before you come into our country".

We said "no, this is not how it works." And I proceeded to show them customs documents from Russia, Mongolia, Thailand, and Japan. After about 20 minutes they photo copied our registration and put a stamp on it with the date and that border crossing. They didn't keep a copy for themselves. We didn't have to pay anything.

I left the bike in PP for a few months while I went home to see family and went into vietnam. I left Cambodia after about 3 months into Laos. The customs guy gave me no problems with documents at the border. Laos was even easier.

They generally don't know whats going on. So you can tell them how it normally works. Unless you get a guy who needs to give you trouble that day. then you might have to hand over paperwork ($$$)

I used my carnet to get into Cambodia. They ain't an official country for it but they stamped it and in I went, too easy.
