Buying an Enfield in India
 

Can anyone tell me how much a decent bike will cost me in India. I thought I'd buy an Enfield. Any advice on Kit and customising would be appreciated.

I just got back a few weeks ago from a 7000 mile tour through the north of india and up to ladakh and nepal. My advice is to spend a little extra and buy a bike that wont break down. I bought mine from Lalli singh in karol bagh in new delhi. He sold me a 350cc thunderbird 2003 model with only 2800 kms for about 1250 bucks u.s. I put 11,000 kms on it and brought it back 6 months later and sold it back for about 820 us. not too bad for the trip. I put it through hell too. And it was powerful enough to take me and my girlfriend to the highest roads on earth. also it shifted on the side that I know best, disk break on the fron too. If you start in delhi definently talk to him. dont sell yourself short and buy a shiny looking bike from some traveller leaving to another place, unless you get it checked out for sure. I have seen a lot of people with bikes held together by zip ties and when it is time to sell they paint it up and get almost the same price they bought it for, not too honest but who am I to say? anymore ques? About all travelers we met who bought bullets ended up spending a lot more than they initially dealt with the reseller. So I guess that says 2 things One is that Cody is probably right. And 2 is: make sure you assign an extra stash of cash for repairs, and renovations. Someone we travelled with spent 150% of his purchase price to make it as good as the reseller said id was.
But don't let this scare you. We've only travelled about 2000k with a bullet tru ladakh and it's definately THE way to travel there!

Sounds like the exact trip we are planning. Have some experience with bike and cars but was really looking forward to someone fairly decent to buy it from. There'll be two of us on there and I was wondering if the 350 would cope but looks fine. I'll head to this guy in Dehli. I take it this is a part of Dehli and this guy will be fairly easy to catch hold of. Would be very prepared to pay $1250 for a decent bike. It's a lot less than I thought.

Three questions.

Can you give us some ideas of a route. We're in europe in a camper so it's pretty hard for planning anything.

Is there any insurance needed.

Any idea on shipping cost back to the states? Planning on shipping it to NZ so it should be a similar price.
