Big bike into Indonesia?? - Horizons Unlimited

G´day

Hey guys, I require some advice please. I am currently living in Bali, Indonesia and am thinking about trying to get my old R100s in there for say 12 months? Ok I know in Indo that it is bloody expensive to try and get an imported bike in there and the largest that can be bought there is a 200cc Honda Tiger! In Bali they have some other rules for big bikes but it is difficult to to take them to Java or Sumatra due to the paperwork that is reguired.

Has anyone taken a bike in there with a Carnet and if so what had to be done and which port did you ship to? I am aware of all the brown envelopes that are required there but do not want to resort to this if I don´t have to.

I would appriesiate any assistance that anyone may have.

Have you checked the "Shipments by Travellers" section? (link on left)

Ther are certainly some shipments into Indonesia, should be some info.

Hey, mate.

Not quite sure what you mean by not being able to take your bike from Bali to Java and Sumatera. I could be wrong of course, but I think the officials you were talking to (assuming you were talking to offcials) were just waiting for you to bribe them ("damai aja lah, pak!") The only places that might be a bit dodgy to drive around in foreign plates would be Aceh, West Papua and Maluku. With the fighting going on, especially in Aceh, it would be best to miss out on those areas anyway.

Alternatively, try and get in touch with members of IMBI (Ikatan Motor Besar Indonesia -- Indonesian Big Bike Association). They could be of some help.

I'll try and see if I can find their contact details.

I got 2 bikes in without Carnets quite easily. Ride to Darwin and ship your bikes to East Timor, go to the Indonesian embassy and get a temporary pass (many Timores use this to get Occussi, the East Timor enclave). Ride into Indonesia and keep going. We spent some time riding around Bali. There is also a Gentleman in Bali that has a big BMW. He belongs to the HU community.

I was never checked until Sumatra when we left for Malaysia

Thanks for the info mate. I have spoke with Jak several times regarding this and he can,t help at all. Never done it before and has his own bikes to sell. The reason that you find it difficult to take a Balinese bike to Java, Sumatra etc is that they do not have the correct papers. Most of these bikes are assembled illegally in Indo and in Bali they have a special kind of tolerence if you know what I mean?

Anyway I am still working on a couple of things, maybe just disasemble the bike and take it in as parts like all the rest there?
