Anyone Planning To Ship Dilli to Darwin Around End Of June

Hi Guys,

We are currently in Malaysia planning our route through Indonesia and onto Australia, anyway I was thinking if anyone else is planning to be going from Dili to Darwin at around the same time (currently Perkins have the boat leaving on 22-06-09) we might be able to share shipping cost?

Hi there, we are thinking of doing the same but still haven't figured out how to get to Indonesia (Sumatra) from Malaysia with our Landrover.

I know there is a ferry from Penang, but this liner doesn't take cars. Do you know something I don't? Or is that just another advantage of travelling by bike :mchappy:.

Hi Don

We are you using Carka Shipping & Trading to transport our bike from Penang to Medan. Mr Lim is the man to contact there. Their details are

187 2nd Floor
Lebuh Pantai 10300
Georgtown
Tel: +6042625879

They have a boat once a week to Medan. We missed this weeks boat but will know on this coming Monday when the boat leaves next week. Not sure whether they take cars though but it's worth a try. Hope this helps.

Hi guys,

Apparently, Mr Lim from Cakra Shipping in Penang can sort out any vehicle up to 8m length. Just give him a phone call/e-mail, he's very helpful & easy to deal with. (Only problem for us was: he can't tell exactly when the ship will leave... we had 2 days notice). But it does indeed leave once a week.

For bikes, it's easy & straight-forward. The boat has its own crane installed for loading. For cars, he said he needs to use the harbor freight crane, which makes it more expensive. But possible.

Hope this helps
Bjorn

hobospy, we are planning on shipping our car (Half Way Round) from Dilli to Darwin at almost exactly the same time. We are actually aiming for a week later than that (hopefully the following week, maybe the 29th of June), but haven't been recently in contact with Perkins to confirm a shipping date.

Not sure if you would want to wait an extra week (we're still in China, so couldn't be there any earlier), but if your bike will fit in a container with our car it might work our well for both of us? We've got a Subaru Forester, which isn't that big, so I think space would probably be OK. Maybe get in touch directly via email (listed on our Contact Us page Half Way Round ยป Contact Us ) if you think it might work.

cheers, Dave.

Hi Travelsick

The shipping by 'break bulk' (crane loading) is very expensive indeed. I was quoted $AU 8000 Sydney to Mumbai, if you find that breakbulk from Malaysia to Sumatra is much cheaper do let me know! Cheapest way to get to Indo is Singapore to Jakarta (container), there is no container shipping or RoRo to Sumatra, as far as I've been able to figure out.

Hey Dingo.
I am very interested to hear about your experience with getting your bike into Fremantle. How did it go?
Ive heard they are pretty difficult and costly.

Dili to Australia

Hi guys,

I'm currently in Dili, bike will leave on Monday with Perkins

Just to let you know: SDV (Perkin's shipping agent in Dili) hasn't been very helpful at all. Bad communication, arrogant behaviour from the boss (although the actual sales guy was OK to work with), actual shipping dates didn't match the ones on Perkin's website & after a rush-job of cleaning the bike so I'd get the ship, they last minute changed the shipping day without telling me.

If you have enough time for shipping (for example Dili to Brisbane via Singapore: about 10 days), here's a much better option:

Ariana Oceano Shipping.
They can do Dili to pretty much anywhere in Australia, for a better price than SVD/Perkins. Most ships go via Singapore though, so it takes a little longer than Perkins.
Contact is Troy Adams, an extremely helpful guy who can also help you get bikes/cars cleaned:

Thanks for that, delivery time might be a bit too long for us but thanks for the heads up on SDV, I have it when you are forced into taking something because it is the only one on offer

golfish 31 May 2009 11:16

Thanks for that Bjorn - good to know there are some options, but a bit concerning that SDV are not so good. I have to say, it's taken me a few emails back a forth to SDV to get answers to the questions I asked in the first email.

The schedule I have form SDV shows ships leaving Dilli on the 30th of May and the 6th of June (I'm guessing the 30th of May is what you were told originally?) That's a worry for us if one is actually leaving on the 1st June (the one you're on) - I might get in touch with them again! We've got a very tight schedule and that could really mess us up.

thanks
