Another China Question

G’day All,

I have been following the discussion about entering China over the past year or so. So much has been written and now I cannot find the thread I am looking for and hope someone can direct me.

I want to explore the possibility of shipping (two bikes/ two people) into China from Oz, using a “tour” and leave via Mongolia. Time frame would be early May 2006. Time in country will be dependent upon the cost.

The aim is to get to Mongolia and I see this as a possible alternative to Japan/ V’stock/ Chita. Been there/ done that and don’t really need to do it again (expect Japan that is which is a hidden gem!!!!)

I thought I read some where about a bloke that did tours in China that appeared to be fairly flexible. As I recalled the arrangement was to meet each night at a prearranged GPS point. That style of “tour” would suit us and have the benefit of getting someone to help with the paper work. I hoping the “benefit” of less time doing the Chita to Khabarovsk leg would off set the potential cost of the tour/ paper work.

Any assistance would be great.

I went through the process of applying for the permits a while ago. I originally got in touch with Zeng Lin in Xianjing province, who is the guy i think you're talking about. From what ive heard he just meets you at the border, gives you the papers and then meets you at the Pakistan border to get you out. I think he can only arrange permits to allow you to bridge the gap between the 'Stans' and the Karakoram highway in Pakistan.
Zeng gave me the number and email of his frien Huang Wei in Beijing. He can arrange the permits for any other areas of the country. It takes at least 3 months though as your whole route needs to be apporved by army etc. in each province you pass through.
I didn't end up actually getting the permits as we ran out of time and changed route, but they were both very helpful and speak good english. For Zeng Lin use 246581@163.net
