All About Nepal

Hi!

Me and James are halfway through our trip from London to Australia, and currently relaxing in Dubai.

Our next bit is Nepal and India, landing in Nepal in about 3 weeks, so we hope we can gather some information from other HU travellers.

Firstly, i read very briefly somewhere that bikes over 650cc weren't allowed in Nepal, but haven't seen that elsewhere, so can anyone refute that? We have a carnet that doesn't exclude Nepal. (we're on a ktm 990).

Does anyone have any suggestions for roads to ride? We've heard that nepal has some of the best motorbike roads in the world, but will we encounter many problems for the fact that it's Oct/Nov (besides the cold)? Does anyone have any recommendations for websites/sources to check conditions of the roads (landslides etc)?

Regarding the land borders to India, are they open all year round or are they likely to close due to snow?

And lastly (probably not last, but the last I can think of at this stage), does anyone have any recommendations for freight/cargo companies to fly our bike from Dubai to Nepal?

We're really looking forward to this next bit of our journey, and even if we can't enjoy the roads in Nepal, we're still going to enjoy kathmandu, pokhara and the trekking!

Looking forward to any replies

Cat and James

Nepal rocks!

Just go, beautiful country, great people (really nice), amazing food and even still cheap.

Two English friends were riding two XT 660 R, so at least, no limit at 650. (I think/am almost sure there is not limit, but cannot confirm it myself).

Snow should not a problem at that time. We rode with very improper gear (thin raincoat) in November with no worries, not even cold. Only in December it started to be a little colder. So, get ready to extend your visas (yes, you can get it on arrival to the border).

Roads are just great fun, and you will the quickest, be sure (at least, we were on Pulsar 150cc! ). Enjoy Siddharta highway from Lumbini to Pokhara. And do not miss a trekking, just beautiful, you can rent any gear there or buy North FAKE.

Enjoy the trip,

Esteban

PS: If coming from India, get updated info about returning in a 3 months period (they are just a pain!).

Hi,

if you are looking for a real dirtroad with nice landscape, you can go from Pokahara to Muktinath 3800m. This dead end road follows a rivervalley and the upper secti on is part of the Annapurna-Treck. It is a rough road, but if a Enfield can do it, it schoulld be possible on a KTM. It is a 3-4 day trip, and there are a lot of guesthouses on the way, so you can leave most of your lugggage in Pokahara.
Look some fotos at Google Earth it is just amaising...

Greetings from Thailand Heiko

ps. I am traveling asia in the other direction, so we might meet on the road...
