Safety concerns aside, remember you cannot enter from Pakistan as the Khyber region is closed to foreigners from Peshawar, though you can enter Pakistan from Afghanistan over the Khyber Pass.

This question comes up periodically; I'd avoid if I were you unless you have a penchant for orange jumpsuits and big knives.

I've posted a detailed thread on my experience. You would be highly visible on a bike, but I think it is still possible in certain areas. You could certainly dip into Afghanistan from Turkmenistan or Uzbekistan quite safely. The Pakistan border road is not totally safe, but there are no Taliban checkpoints at present, so the risk is from attacks targeted at US / Afghan army convoys. Basically, I'd say it's OK, but not as safe as Kabul - Mazar etc.

Orange jump suits and big knives?? Balls.
