Lightbulb Found a bike, driver missing!

I have troubles with my bike and ended up by a dealer!
There is an red KLR with a numberblade from New Mexico, They say he changed it on the way as he travelled! His name is John and all his stuff is in the Hotel but he is not! The bike is there since more than a month! He but it there to change the chain and he wanted to pick it up next day, but never showed up again! The owner from the shop informed the american embassy here in Manaus but no one found any documents they say!

I hope that information is wrong!
Does somebody know this bike and his driver called John!
No one knows anything here!

Appie

runnoft - Haha that is hilarious but no it`s not Jon`s bike (you have linked to my website).

THAT red KLR got sold in Colombia so unless Paul Thoreson of Casa Kiwi is in trouble...

It is the same bike, but no sticker on the side and there is a big silver - black Givi topcase on the bike and a red round chain to lock the bike!
The yellow numberblade haves the number P76050 and is from New Mexico!

Here is the link for the fotos!

One mate in ADV get to this information:

“The owner of the KLR is John Hilman of Santa Fe. SFPD went to the address from the plate registration and his neighbor said he hadn't been there in a year or so. It was unclear to me if he had moved out, or just hadn't been home in a year. SFPD was trying to contact any relatives in the area that might know more.”

see all ADV Found a bike, driver missing! - ADVrider post

Nobody know or meet this John????

Perhaps someone in the Ecuador community can contact the American Embassy to track some things down and provide an update on this?

Contact the shop, hotel and Appie to do a bit of fact finding.

I would have a few questions, like:

What name did he use when dropping the bike off for a new chain?
Work order? Description of rider from the shop guy?

Did anyone verify the Embassy was contacted. If they were, what have they done? Who contacted them, and when?

Someone needs to search the room. The Hotel would require a Passpost to get a room...this would tell us his real name, if he is someone other than John Hillman. May also provide clues as to what he was up to there. This is very easy and basic and could have (should have) been done in a day.

A months is a very long time for somone to be missing and too long to wait before doing anything to help.
Family members will need to go to Manaus (a hell hole) and pay Police to interorgate a few people S. American style. Bring lots of $20 bills.

There may be a ton of info we'll never know here...but I smell Fish. Big time.

This does not look good. I fear the worst .......

Ecuador???????

Manaus is in Brazil the biggest city in middle the Amazons jungle.
Appie right now is near the Andes mountains in Peru, he cant do anything else.

I’m betting but only his family or relatives can do some if they know he’s lost.

Desculpame,
My geography is WAY OFF! Somehow I always mix up Iquitos, Leticia and
Manaus. (none are in Ecuador!! ) I've only heard from travelers
doing Amazon river trip along that route, never been there.

How can his family find him in Brazil? The US Embassy should get involved here,
its their job. Anyway, hope he turns up somehow.

Adress of the bike shop and some more!

Here is all the information i have!

The bike was dropped of by from John, in the shpp they say that he works as biologico. He wanted to pick up the bike next day again but never showed up again! The shopowner called the hotel and asked for Jhon but they did not see him for a while!
Than they contact the american embassy and they went after it they sayd, but could not find any Passport or other papers in his room!
That is all what i know, maybe the american embassy in Manaus knows more about that! They should do, or they never where informed!

The name of the store and the adress i have here!

Carlos Almir A. Marques
9902-7750
Av Tefe, 803- Cachoeirinha
Cep.: 69065-020
Manaus - AM
e-mail.: fmarques@marquesmotos.com.br

An other phonenumber is 3214-9181
faxnumber 3214-9182

The codes for Brasil is 0055 and for Manaus 092
If you call from outside Brasil use 005592 3214 9181 to reach the shop!

I think a portugese speaking person should call there, because not many people speak english! If you are lucky you will find one in the shop!
And not everybody who is interested should call or in the end they will ignore all the phonecalls what would be the worst at all!

I hope somebody can find out more, i am not in Manaus anymore to search for more! I am in Cuzco in Peru!
But even it is the worst the family should know what happened or at least a part of it!
I lost my brother this year and i know that it is very important to know what was going on (We still do not know everything)!

Good luck Appie!

Appie,
Sorry you have lost your brother...my heart goes out.

You have gone way beyond the call of duty here to try and help a fellow rider.
Good on 'ya mate! The details you have so kindly provided will certainly help to begin a search. If no one else thanks you....well, I thank you.
Maybe we meet on the road someday?

Now it is up to family and the US state dept. to do their work...sadly, our govt. are so busy helping US Oil companies and looking for al Quaida under the bed, they do little to help an average person.

apparently resolved...

Missing rider in Brasil... can we help? - Page 10 - ADVrider

for any concerned onlookers...
John Hilman, the minor adventure rider celebrity, safe and sound in the Guatemalan jungle...?

Assuming this is the end of the story, I think Appie should be commended for his concern for a fellow biker. I think maybe assumptions of foul play should be tempered for future `mysteries`. Obviously a very odd situation, I guess it could well have been different.

Agreed, and if so, I hope the "missing rider" will sort out the mess he left on Carlos, the bike shop owner's lap...

Maybe next time, we'll only worry if it's an abandoned GS... LOL!!

Thank's for ending up the story with an happy end!

I think if somebody leaves his bike back because of the repair costs of 300,- Reais, $US 150,- than is a very strange man!!!

I really undersyand that he can not afford the extremely high costs of US$ 0,50 to call the owner of the shop and to tell him that he can have the bike as a present!

My from Belem would have smiled and would have payed him 1.000,- US$ for the bike and would have picked it up in Manaus as well! But if somebody is that strange it is better for him to end up with nothing!

Sorry about my comment here (I will not write everything what i think)!

John i wish you Good luck and save travels for the future but please think a little more before you leave your bike behind again!

Appie!
