Your reasonable Central > South America budgets?

Hey Hey!

Will be doing this journey from California in July after a few months in SE Asia and am curious to see what all your experiences are in terms of monthly costs after cycle & kit? Why not split it up by region if that makes more sense!?

How much should i allow for a reasonable lifestyle living in basic accomodation & backpackers do you think?

Any other tips welcome :)

Cheers
Jamie

Cheers for that

Had searched to no avail but that is very helpful indeed - with those sort of costs I may even make it all the way to Argentina!

Will certainly add how far my two cents got me once I'm on the road.

Thanks
Jamie

I just did six weeks in South America at m/l $100 US a day, much of the variability you will find is in fuel costs. I traveled 15,000 K which meant I was on the road most days and burnt a lot of fuel. You could stay in cheaper accommodations than I did most of the time if you take the time to check out camping etc. (blog at "horizonsunlimited.com/tstories/thode"
Have a great trip

Bob,
$100 a day is pretty expensive for s.america. Thats 9000$ for your 3 months. Can you give more details? Are you including the bike shipping to S.America?

We averaged around $30/day for South America in 2006/7 but that was for 2 sharing accommodation. That includes fuel and food.

As per the $100 day, some of that went for port charges or visa fees and moto repair & tires. As stated in original post fuel prices were up and with long days on the road that eat a lot of cash. Also I am not experienced at this type of travel and speak very poor Spanish so until I figured some of it out latter in the trip some extra $ were spent.

The biggest variability in what it costs (IMHO) is how much time you have. I had six weeks and wanted to cover some area. This makes hotels look better than camping due to setup time and after 10 to 12 hours on the road you just need a place to shower and sleep. If you have the time (much better way to travel) you can check out the area and find camping spots or cheaper places to stay. If you are only burning one tank of fuel a day that is only going to be $10 to $20 a day where I was filling up at least twice a day for $20 to $40. Most Hotels or Cabins were $20 to $35 a night. I split this cost and got a room with two beds when I was riding with someone (up to $50 for a double room). Hostels were from $6.50 to $15 depending where you were.

Also my costs were higher due to which countries I was traveling in. Chile, Argentina and Brazil are going to be more expensive than Central America.

If you need to keep your costs down two things you need to do:
1. Learn to speek the local langage, (or ride with someone who can)
2. Don't get in a hurry, give yourself twice as much time as you think you will need.
