Who is where on the Gringo Trail?
 

Currently in Real de Catorce in SLP state Mexico, meandering south. Intend to stop for a week in Oaxaca to upgrade my Spanish skills. Interested in meeting for a beer? Currently alone on a KLR650. ajtiegs aaatttt yahooooo dot commmm

Glad you made it to Real. I hope you've discovered the other little town
out by the rail station as well. I guess this is considered Peyote central
or something. I was working when I was there in '95 so never indulged.

I found some good Italian restaurants there when I was in Real, manned by actual Italians(travellers). Beats tacos and beans for the 20th time in a row.

There are dirt roads that head west or south west out of Real that go forever. (Or so I was told) Probably not good to do solo. Nice churches there too, as I'm sure you've noted. Any Huichol on walkabout? Probably a bit early for them. They show up around October, with bloody feet and coming down from a Peyote high, 10 day, 150 mile hike, starving and still spaced out in Wirikutu world. :eek3:

Any chance you will still be in Mexico come Oct. and the HU meeting in
Copper Canyon? Probably not. There are also good language schools in Antigua, Guat. but I'm sure you knew this.

Hope the trip is going well for you so far. If you have any mechanicals or
need something, let me know. I'm a good scrounger and could probably help
locate parts or whatever.

I suppose it would have been wise to say where I,m actually headed for. Yes, the plan is all the way to Tierra del Fuego. Maybe by Christmas, maybe not.

Patrick: It rained most of the time I was in Real, so I didn´t get too adventuras. Got a work out walking up and down those hills. Ate at the Italian restaraunt though, if it's the same one. There are at least 2 with real Italians.

Rain? Rain in the rainy season....imagine that! :blushing:
I stayed at a Hotel run by Italians with the restaurant below. Across the
square there was a Pizza place. All years ago. I was there about 3 weeks on
a small film called "La Flecha". Never released in the US. It stunk.(but the sound was OK:w00t:

There were some Euro artists there making jewelery and such. There is a big religious fest there in Sept. or early Oct (maybe todos santos?) when they
say something like 50,000 people flood the town. Crazy.

Guanjauto sounds great. Are you stopping over in San Miquel de Allende?
Artist/Dillentante town. Lots of rich American divorcee's, Mexican and US art students. Smaller than 'Juato. Another "cute" town but fun too. My GF was in heaven.

I'm re-reading Ted Simon's original Jupiter's Travels. It really holds up quite well. He would welcome you to the land of No Hay...but your not quite there yet....but almost:smartass: You'll know when your close when you get liquid coffee concentrate in a Soy Sauce container with hot water when you've ordered cafe'. :eek3:

I guess my original intent for this thread was that I know there are a bunch of people on the way south, and I thought maybe if we had a place to post where are at, some of us might get together at some point. Not to discourage other comments though.

Don't forget to visit Colombia! In my opinion - and that of many other riders - it has some of the best riding in the Americas. Plus it's very safe these days. Not to mention the incredibly friendly people, spectacular scenery, varied terrain, great curvy highways, etc. Don't just catch a plane from Panama to Ecuador or Venezuela, skipping Colombia. I've been living here for two years and can vouch that it is well worth a ride through - a county not to be missed!

I met 2 Ecuadorans in Guanajuato, Mexico on their way to Alaska by motorcycle a week ago. They had the same thing to say about Colombia. Hope to see you in 8 weeks or so.

i'm also on the trail... left LA three weeks ago and getting to ecuador at the beginning of september. then slowing right down for the west coast south, and heading for buenos aires.

I hope you have a chance to get over to the Lake. I lived in Solola'
about a 1/4 mile out of town on the road down to Panahachel. Right where
the tour buses stop for photos of the lake. Santiago Atitlan is also nice as well as San Pedro. Great place for Day of the Dead celebrations.
Great swimming in the lake and good Perch.
