Where to get yellow fever vaccination for Brasil

Hey,

I am leaving from North Carolina to South America in about a month, and from what I understand, I need a yellow fever vaccination to enter Brasil.

Lonely Planet says that the vaccination is available at some border crossings, but I speak no portuguese, and I dont want to get that far and then not be able to get the shot.

If I get it before I leave it is going to cost me $170 for the injection, and that seems kind of steep to me.

Does anyone know of where I can get a yellow fever vaccination en route to Brasil ( I will be going to pretty much all of the countries except for the Guyanas and Suriname.

Any advice from those of you who have done this before is greatly appreciated.

Josh

Vaccination

I got mine at the local health dept here in South Carolina. Spend the money and get it before you go. There is enough to worry about when traveling-get this one out of the way. Marty

I appreciate the reply Marty,

From what my guidebook says (lonely planet)
"At most Brazilian borders and major airports there are vaccination posts where you can have the jab (free for foreigners) and get the certificate immediately."

I am not too worried about actually contracting the disease (should I be?), and really only want the certification to get into the country. If I can save $170 I can add at least 4 days to my trip, and I am running on a relatively tight budget here, so when I am out of money I've got to be back.

Marty, how much did your shot cost down there in South Carolina. My parents live in Columbia, and they are my first stop on my trip. If you know of a place that might be more reasonably priced, I would appreciate it.

Also Marty, did you go to Brasil? If so, did you notice any stations for injections like the guide book is talking about at borders? Were you asked for the certificate, or is it one of those things they say they require, but in practice dont really check up on?

thanks for your help,

Josh

Yaller fever

Now I see in the guidebook you are right about free shots. I could have saved some money. Here the Richland County Health Dep't gives the shots. Give them a call for up to date pricing. By the time I ever get to Brasil my shots will be outdated. I did drive US to Tierra del Fuego if you have some questions maybe I can answer. Marty

WOW!!!

the Mecklenburg County Health Dept doesnt give yellow fever shots, and they recommended me to a place who wanted to charge me +- $100 for a consultation before they would even talk to me about yellow fever shots, or how much they cost.

Still looking for a cheaper place to get them, anybody with ideas (or who know of a Brasil border crossing where I can get one), please chime in.

Just so anyone else who is reading this knows, I called the Richland County Public Health Department 803-576-2980 and they told me it was $77 plus a $25 administration fee for the shot, no extra charge if you are not a resident.

Thanks Marty,

Columbia is my first stop, since my parents live there, and I guess I will be getting the shot there. Maybe I can buy you dinner and/or a few beers and pick your brain about your trip. Got an email address or phone # so I can get in contact with you??

I will be leaving as close to August 20th as I can (it depends on when I get everything done that I need to).

Thanks again.

Sending you a private message on this site with my email. If you do not receive it let me know on the public part of HUBB. By the way, once you pay the $25 fee there is no further administrative fee for more shots, such as tetanus, typhoid, and hepatitus, all of which I recommend. Marty

if they require the vaccination at the border (mostly they donĀ“t) than you can get it at the border itself too. At all state hospitals in Brazil it is for free.
