DR650 Cracked Engine

I bought a 2000 DR650 in Santiago a couple of weeks ago (At least I think that is the year). In any event the boss that holds one of the starter gears cracked off both on the valve cover, and on the engine block. I am trying to source parts from the states off ebay as I write this.

Here is the current situation. For aproximatley $70 a motorcycle shop in Talca can disaasemble and reassemble the motor provided I supply a set of Gaskets. Once disaasembled I can then take the left side engine case to a welding shop where they can repair the broekn boss.

I know this solution would not be as good as getting brand new cases but it is far chepaer, and less time consuming. If I did this, I would also plan on doing the torque limiting Starter clutch mod. Can anyone explain to me exactly what this is and how it is done. From what I could gleam on the internet an extra, back torque limiting gear, is added to the two gears of the starter clutch mechanism on a 1998-1999 and some 2000 models. Is this simply a drop in item or do other components need to be modified?

I have already contacted the Chilean communities but figured i would also post here. It seems the best option is to buy a complete engine from the USA and have it shipped down to me in chile. My questions are, would there be high taxes or import duites on the engine? Would it be cheaper to pick up the engine in say Santiago or Valpariso rather than in Talca where I am living? Would it be difficult to change the paperwork for the motorcycle (ie Pardon) now that the engine numbers will be different? Would it be difficult to take the old stripped down engine back with me as checked luggage?

Shipping parts into Chile can be a problem due to customs. I found out some months ago when I got a tyre and some other things send from Spain through a company here in Chile. Luckily they helped me out and paid the custom fee for me. I tried other times getting things send to Buenos Aires without problems. But always have in mind that you might end up paying more!

If need something welded here is the place: Race Tech, Chile in Santiago. I got my Hyperpro damper serviced there for 100 USD after it had collapsed! Waypoint: S 33 21.273' W 070 30.554' - If you want I would be glad to take you there and talk with the owner Ignacio. I got my rear damper serviced there last week (100 USD). I will get my frame welded there as well, they are very skilled and nice.

For others who need to get a BMW repaired in Santiago, visit Gabriel, he has everything from ECU's to you name it. Unfortunately he only puts his hands on Bimmers. Waypoint: S 33 21.582' W 070 41.121'

I don't know about your papers for the bike, but in Denmark the engine numbers does not exist. We only use frame serial numbers on the registration paper, the engine number is not stated anywhere.

You might need to contact the airline company regarding having a complete engine with you as checked luggage. Of course it has to be emptied of oil and fuel as this might be regarded as Dangerous Goods depending on the quantity of the liquids.
