Uyuni to Calama - Easy

Hi folks,

Thought I'd post ref the Uyuni to Calama route. I just rode it following the Dakar. There is quite a lot of info out there suggesting it is not straight forward and it seems there is some confusion about where the immigration / customs are.

It is very straight forward.

- Immigration for both Bol and Chile are at the border.

- There is a route from Uyuni to the border that goes further south than Route 5, which most people seem to mention in blogs etc. It is a good route, 225km, beautiful scenery and has a gas station about 60km from Uyuni. It is numbered 701 on Google Earth and was on my GPS using OSM. Took me about 3.5 hours.

- The route from the border to Calama is fine. About 200km. Stunning scenery when in amongst the mountains. Didn't see any gas before Calama (but wasn't looking).

So don't worry about the whole clearing immigration in San Pedro de Atacama thing. It's all very straightforward.

In Santiago (for the forth time!) about to buy a moto for my chicita, then truck to Calama where I've left my Tenere and from where we we finally set off north again. I reckon we'll cross paths in Peru. We need to do an info off load!!!

Ollague v. San Pedro

Yeah, the road west from Uyuni to Calama, crossing at Ollague, was straight forward when I rode it a few weeks ago. But the lagunas route to San Pedro involves a bit more navigation, sand, and the immigration/aduana offices aren't so easy to find. Two totally different routes.
