Chile - Buy Local or Import?

Hi folks -- just landed in Santiago for a several years (or more) job. Couldn't be happier. Now the question becomes whether to buy a bike here or bring a new one in from the US (understand the prohibition against permanent import of used vehicles).

Likely target is a BMW f800gs, and actually shopping for two since my daughter is coming down to live as well, soon as she gets some details wrapped up in the states. Not really interested in shady deals or sneaking across borders. Respect for national sovereignty and all that. but not anxious to pay twice the price either.

Any knowledgable counsel out there?

mny thnx -- mr

If you're a resident and can afford it I would definitely recommend purchasing in Chile because when you sell it you will get most of your money back.

Seconded !!

Loads of people fly into Chile JUST because it's the easiest place to buy a bike and do some touring.

I can imagine imported from the states will be a bit of a headache !

If you live in a duty free area, then import your bike. It will only be allowed out of duty free zones for a short period (90 days).

Otherwise, you'll need to buy a Chilean Plated bikes.

Thanks all

Thnx, all -- I made my decision, and went local. Feel good about the choice. Won't be able to take delivery for a coupla months, but it'll take me that long to get permanent RUT anyway.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
