Transport accross the Andes

Hi all, I´m returning to Chile at the begining of October from Argentina, probably the Mendoza area. So i´d like to know what would be the best way to transport my bike over the Andes to Chile, so that I can then ride back to Santiago. The other option would be to ride north to Salta then cross over at an easier pass.

thanks

I haven't gone through the crossing but there is a straight border crossing from Mendoza on the road to Santiago. Takes about 8 hours on the bus from memory. Have no idea how that translates to a bike. Are you consciously trying to avoid this route?

No I´m not trying to avoid this route!! ,at the start of my travels in Febuary I crossed this route. But in early October the weather conditions will be a bit different I guess, probably too much snow or ice to ride accross, so I´m looking at other options, such as transporting the bike on a truck or riding north to avoid the snow/ice, any easy option will do!

OK - fair point, I did realise after I posted.
good luck!
Personally I would back myself to just talk to locals in Mendoza who are really friendly if you speak a bit of espanol. If you have a tight timeframe maybe wouldn't be best.
Please let me know how you get on. Sorry I can't be more help.

They're a logistics company that helped me out when my bike went bang in the Atacama, if memory serves they also truck stuff to/from Argentina.

Lombre, Paso Cristo Redntor is open now. The roads are snow and ice free, it is pretty cold though and traffic is a killer. Trucking it is not an easy option, as crossing your bike from Argentina into Chile without you physically being there can be major headache.

Further up north would be an option. Look around the HUBB for some excellent write ups on the Paso Sico and the like in Jujuy, north of Salta. Check weather.com for actual weather.

Have fun!
