From Texas to Puerto Vallarta, Jal, Mexico
I'm currently in San Antonio, TX and would like to get some feed back on the best way to cross the border. I've heard the stories and am not paranoid but like to be cautious. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you want to minimize your time in the border zone go from San Antonio toEagle Pass, with your Mexico insurance already bought . Then cross the bridge and motor out of town and go south on Mex 57 and do all the tourist paperwork there at the km57 customs terminal on the west side of the town of Allende Coahuila, can't miss it .
Depending on the news if anything particularly nasty is going on with the army against the narcos any of the other crossings should be no problem if you get it done early in the day and again travel on. If you are going in late in the afternoon you can get a good hotel on the Mexican side and then stay off the streets after dark. It is all a question of keeping informed of recent events, watch the news about the Mexican border towns here on the web.I'm doing that now as I intend to cross at on of the the lower Rio Grande bridges tomorrow afternoon

If you are going to be in San Antonio for another day or 2, a friend and I are going to a motorcycle show tomorrow (Friday) night. Give a shout if you want to ogle some bikes and talk Mexico travel. two one zero -347- one eight three one.
Regarding border crossings, the current hot spots seem to be Roma, Rio Grande City, and on down the valley. Luckily these are not on your way. Eagle Pass, Del Rio, and Laredo haven't made much news lately.

I've been traveling in Mexico for the last two months now and am currently in Chihuahua. From what i have seen there are far more military in the south than in the north, couldn't tell you why?? Definately some stuff going on down here, but unless your looking for trouble, you won't find it. Don't travel at night and in the North i would personally stay on the beaten path for now.

Border update
Reynosa crossing on 20 Feb 2010 was excellent, virtually no US traffic going in, and I had the entire border terminal to share with 2 or 3 others during the half hour it took to get the TVIP and tourist card. The other bridge carrying INTO the US was jammed full. I highly recommend Reynosa, downtown crossing, .
Stick to the left lane on the bridge and folow the signs to Importacion Temporal which gets you in a direct lane to that building a block east without having to ride around on the street. They let you pay for the TVIP AND the Tourist Card rght at the Banjercito therer, no hassel about paying for the latter at a bank elswhere. Reynosa was very calm, no visible problems with army vs narcos ,
