temporary import peru ecuador colombia, how long possible

Hello

my wife and I have two bikes stationed in Buenos Aires.
We are living in Berlin, Germany.
May 2008 we will return and keep on going in SA heading into Bolivia and north,
Flight back to Berlin is planned september 08,

Question is:
for how long is it possible to park the bikes in peru, ecuador or colombia? Or even venezuela or brasil.
We need at least 6 months before we will be able to return back to SA in 2009

Thanx in advance

Goetz

Peru is 3 months - I have not found a way to extend this except leave the country and come back.

Colombia is 3 months and 3 month extension. However if D.A.S only give you a 60 day tourist visa, which is becoming increasingly more common, then DIAN will only give a bike permit for the duration of the tourist visa.

Also, any extension for the bike permit must be made in person.

thanx Happy Hacker, thanx Raaay.

I know it´s possible to leave the bike 8 months in Argentina, maybe 12 months in Uruguay and 3 months in Chile.
But we are heading to the northern part of South America.

Is there any country in SA exept the mentioned ones where it is possible to store the bikes for at least 6 months?

Happy trails

Goetz

You could try Brasil - the four times I've been there they've either messed up or not given me import papers, they never asked for the papers when I left either.

While you are in Ecuador, go to the Colombian consulate and ask for a longer Visa. I got one for 7 months. Left the bike in Medellin and came back no problem. It will not be a normal visa. It is called "Unspecified Visa" or something. I did a bit of a write up in the Documents forum.

Okay, so lets assume you leave your bike in Peru for an unspecified period of time after your permit expires. What is the worst that can happen? Pay a fine when you leave, don't sign the bike out when you leave? Bribe yet another foreign official? does Peru stamp the bike into your passport?

Home Coming!

Hey Goetz and Karine, we were just talking about you two. Your bikes are fine, just as you left them, and ready to continue your extended tour of South America.

Jeff Condon featured in "The Ride" a National Geographic documentary "Alaska to Patagonia" (GlobeBusters) on BMWs was with us for more than a month. He is an expert machinist and welder as well as Trans America motorcycle guide. He built two trolleys (low plywood and metal platforms on wheels) for us. The motorcyles parked in front of your BMWs are strapped on the trolleys and can be rolled out to remove your bikes. Your gear is still neatly packed in the locker.

After his second Alaska to Patagonia ride, Jeff bought a 1974 Citroen 3cv here in Buenos Aires, restored it, and is now touring. (see BUY/TOUR/SELL in Argentina thread) He will be returning to Australia in May and we will store his Citroen "Cristina" for him, until his next ride and vacation.

Pending a judge's release order, Marty's Harley Davidson 883 has been found (see Missing Moto in Argentina), and will be trucked in from Colete Olivia and Marty is arriving from the States tomorrow. That will be quite a reunion.

I will verify legal length of temporary import permits and possible extensions for all South American countries for you and post here soon. Not sure about Brazil, but the other data posted here seems right, at first blush.

As you know an 8 month temporary import permit is available in Argentina. Note: If you buy new/used bikes in Argentina, no temporary import permit is needed and they could be stored here forever.

We are looking forward to your return. the "island of love" is waiting and so is your room. See you in May. xfiltrate "Ed and Elisa"

hola porteños
que tal la vida en BA?
nice to hear from the both of U.
As U c, we r planning the next leg.

CU in may, we know where to stay.

The swiss we know from the road having crossed SA and now staying in Central America told us about a 3 month possible temporary import in ecuador.

Hello Albert Crutcher
what is the knack to get 6 month in ecuador? We will habe to leave the bikes another time in SA and there is hardly a chance for us to return within 3 month.
Woulkd be nice to hear from U

Greetings
Goetz
