In Sucre, Planning Our Escape ... North Road 3?
Greetings Hubbers

We are currently in Sucre, will be here for approx one more week while our new Voltage Reg turns up.

From here we are heading up through Cochabamba then up towards La Paz to see the death road etc.

Our plan is heading down into Paraguay so we were looking at road 3 around the top and head to Santa Cruz, is this a bigarse boring road or one worth taking?

Anyone been on this road that can chime in please, also if anyone is in Sucre this next week and wonna catch up and exchange lies we are in Hostel Pachamama

Hi Kiwis

we are in Cochabamba right now, going to Sucre maybe mid of next week. Didnt got much further on the "3" then Coroico..which was stunning so far! But the road turns into a lowland dirttrack later and I presume some 1000 Km boring rides then until you reach the border...
How long will you stayin Sucre, maybe we can meet for a ? :- )

We will be in Sucre till at least Thursday or Friday think as we are waiting for our parts for the bike which have been sitting in La Paz since last Wednesday due to blockades and strikes.

We are at Hostel Pachamama, parking, wifi, hot water priced right

We have a day of paperwork and getting Mayas Stator back in (assuming it is ready)

Have a safe trip guys, we are in room 9, first floor, don't get room 4 the shower is shite and one bed is really lumpy

For what it is worth, we moved from Sucre to Potosí today. Reportedly, all routes out of Sucre were blocked. We were warned by the owner of the hotel we were staying at that it would be dangerous for us to attempt to pass the roadblock and that we might have stones chucked at us. We dropped by the Pachamama today to say "hi" and you were at the mechanic's, but the manger at your hotel didn't feel that gringo motos would have an issue.

With the mixed opinions we decided to cautiously check it out for ourselves.

We did hit the road block but most people were supportive of us passing and we eventually did. One guy even moved a transport truck for us to get Jenn's bike through. We were offered alternative routes including a dry river bed which I traverse successfully to find that Jenn's bike was just behind said truck.

Although we haven't done this road ourselves, we ran into another couple who took the road from Santa Cruz to La Paz via the amazon (ruta 3) and they said it was absolute hell! Lots of deep mud and the road being blocked by trucks apparently.
If you want to do a great road however I can warmly recommend the back road from Cochabamba - La Paz via ruta 25. It's about 700kms of dirt through some spectacular scenery. Check out our blog post about it: Handful Of Throttle: The REAL Death Road of Bolivia We made a couple of movies about it too which you can find on the blog.
If you manage to leave Sucre there is another great route you can take that goes via Tarabuco and north to Samaipata (Samaipata is a shithole though) which takes you on to the Ruta del Che as well. Here's our blog post about that one: Handful Of Throttle: Ruta Del Che

We are in La Paz at the moment ourselves and will be around the Coroico and Lake Titicaca area the next week before returning to La Paz. Who knows, maybe we'll see you around

Thanks man, we have done the Tarabuco To Samaiapata, enjoyed the road.

Now in Cochabamba for the next 2 -3 days (from 28th) ....plan is to ride up through Ruta 25 to Corioco, just need to find out the gas situ.

Were are you guys at now?

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
