Question Any info on roads Chimbote,Peru to Huaraz ?

Hi all,

Anyone have any advice or info on the road options from Chimbote inland to get to Huaraz ? We are 2 up on 1 R1200GS so can't do major offroading. There seems to be a few options on the map but all look fairly bleak on Google Maps! Any thoughts other than get there back northward from Barranca ?

Thanks in advance,

Ian

I agree, Cañon del Pato is great, rough, but spectacular. You just have to take your time and leave chimbote or Trujillo early. Also, there is a short cut on dirt road that branches off the PanAm 82 kms out of Trujillo. Look for a boom gate and large signs that read ´Projecto Mickowitc (or something) Bocatoma´. The dirt road cuts through the hills to the river, follows the river for a while upstream, then crosses a bridge to the tarmac. After riding the tarmac for a bit (20km?) you arrive at a village from where the Cañon del Pato branches off and cuts through to Huaraz.

Thankyou all for your replies. The road was a bit much for us loaded up 2 up on a big bike so we turned back. Several others reported the road has deteriorated too. Maybe fun on a small bike. Yea I know - not hardcore bikers but we did tackle the gravel road 65km to Churin and back so learning!

Regards all,

Ian

Chimbote to Huaraz, Peru

Well, i got trough on a HD, slow, but ok. The Chavimochic road was closed the last time i tried. I found out after 50 kms on dirt. Had to turn back as there was no one at this steel gate. Not an open route, still in proyect. Night caught me and nearly drove into a 3 mt deep ditch. The normal route, with i´'s 40 tunnels cut roughly through the mountains is awesome. Bit tiring, but not dangerous.

If coming to Huaraz, contact me.
Happy roads to all !!
