South america for a year
 

Just after a bit of feed back plz folks!
Our plans have changed slightly, we were going to spend 18 months away doing south america for approx a year and then central and north for 6 months heading to NYC to finish the trip and back to the UK.
Now due to work issues we will only be away for 12 months so the question is;
1. Stay in south america for the total time away (the only real route we have planned is to get down to Ushuaia at some point in the summer)
2.Rush! around and do the whole trip as planned but over 12 months rather than 18.

We will be in Bueno Aires in the middle of May so not sure how it would work with respect to the climate/weather for the year?
Planning routes is not a strong point of ours and we tend to just follow our noses so I'm guessing we'll rock out of BA and see how it goes but I was wondering if anyone who's spent time in south america can share there views.

For 2 reasons my vote is to stay in South America.

1) I personally enjoy riding in South America more than Central America.
2) The cost of crossing the Darien is quite high, save that money for next time.

South America definitely, I would head north first to Iguazu then, if you like wildlife, it should be (allegedly) almost the ideal time for Brazil as the rainy season should be finished and the mega national park in the middle/south of the country, the Pantanal, will be drying out. Across to Paraguay - Bolivia - Peru - Chile before drifting slowly south following spring to Puerto Montt, Chiloe and the Car. Austral. Then, make your way around the many places worth visiting in Patagonia. It should now be about time for the whales in the Valdes and the Viedma HU meet before checking out all the bits that you missed on the first circuit. I´m at present on my 3rd visit to SA and I still haven´t been to Brazil. You may have noticed that I didn´t mention Ushuaia, thats ´cos I think it´s a dump, also the north, Colombia is really nice, but it means going through not so nice places to get there but each to their own. Along with sub equatorial Africa, sub equatorial America is just about my favourite place. Ride safe.

We're planning to go to SA for a year too. ( instead riding both americas)
I'am sure you can ride the TransAm in less than 6 month IF you really want to.

We start in Valparaiso in march. Maybe we meet in Viedma or Usuaia?bier

Thanks guys, looking like the Darien will have to wait!
Any thoughts on a few places during the year to chill out for a few weeks "holiday"?

What sort of a place do you like to "chill out" in? I like wildlife, bars and sea food but as I said earlier, each to their own so give us a clue. Ride safe.

Yep, those 3 are a good start as is laid back hippy vibe, good surf, cheap food and beer, pretty beach for running in the morning and a few good music bars.
We had to spend 2 months parked up in Goa while Caf's broken arm repaired itself which was right up our street, just too long really!

We're thinking no more than 2/3 weeks at a time, possible 3/4 times during the year.
