Shipping to Brazil
 

Get ready to get a motorcycle w sidecar shipped to Rio Grade do Sul Brazil and would like to know if anyone has done so and what freight company was used and how the service was.
Can be air or ocean.

Have you seen the Shipping section - links on left to "Shipments by Travellers"?

NOTE Brazil is not generally recommended as paperwork and customs can be a big hassle for those who don't speak Portugese - but I'll assume you do, so that will make it a lot easier - but still difficult.

Hi Grant, did kind of leave out some info didn't I.
The bike is currently in Memphis TN. USA.
As for the paperwork, I am "importing" the bike, so a broker on this end will be handling that.

Kind of got shafted when I had my personal stuff moved here, trying to lessen the damage this time.

Optimistic aren't you? http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif DO NOT believe that the broker on this end can properly handle the "importation" of the bike into Brazil without triple checking it yourself. I'm sure you're aware of the customs duties etc that will be charged in Brazil. It can be VERY expensive. Sometimes IF you have owned the bike for a long time, you can return home with it and not pay duty - sometimes. And it can be many years required, or an old model only etc.

Please post the info into the shipping section when all is said and done, so others can benefit from your experience.

Hi Grant; as to "the broker on this end" I mean Brazil, I have been living here for 3 years now.
And yes the duties (Import taxs) they are higher than you think! 95% of the purchase price + freight when all said and done. OUCH!
And you can only import NEW vehicles here.

Blaze - welcome to the board. As someone who hopes to join you in Brazil in 7-8 years, I'm anxious to hear your stories. We'll be in SP at the end of the year so if you're around, maybe we can get meet somewhere.

Have you explored shipping it to a neighboring country and riding it across? An attorney friend told me that you can do this as long as you go in/out of the country every 6 months. That's a hassle but cheaper than import fees. :-)

I think, once we move there, I'll give up the KTM and simply purchase the largest Brazilian-made thumper or dual-sport I can. Right now, that would appear to be a Yamaha 660....Yamaha XT 660R . Actually, I'll purchase two of them... one for me and one for Grant to use when he comes to visit. :-)

Actually, that's part of the plan. I want to have a small farm in a secured community and add a small bunk house, shop, kitchen, etc with internet access for visitors. Brazil to me is one of the great unknowns to most 'mericans and if I can provide a bike for little-to-nothing, I'll have visitors coming down to ride and visit. I plan to charge little or nothing for this.....

Why the north?
The south is not as bad as for the crime issues and soom great areas to ride.
Cheaper too!

Since my wife will still be working, we'll probably start in SP. :-( But, she's agreed that we should have a second home. :-)

If I had to bet, I'd suggest that we'll end up in the south... assuming that somewhere like Florianoplis is considered 'south'. :-)

I did the Belem to Manaus boat trip two years ago. Heck, I'd be happy in a shack on the Amazon but that's just me.
