Advice on routes from Santiago

Hello there,

I'm planning a motorbike trip leaving from Santiago in Oct/Nov this year. I'm looking for advice on a good route that will ideally end up in another large city where i can fly from.
The most obvious one i've seen is to Buenos Aires, but i'm open to suggestions and do not mind which country i end up in, we just want the most spectacular route possible.
We have 2-3 months penciled in for the trip.

Thanks in advance
Chris

Routa 40 is boring, straight and in bad shape. Take the Carretra Austral. See my webiste for pics and route. :: No Horizons ::

Head into Bolivia, it does "spectacular" in a spectacular way.
You can cross over to Argentina and see the rock formations they have on that side, or sample the delights of the Atacama desert. Deserts are more interesting than people realise.

Consider a "loop", start and finish in Santiago. Are you taking your own bike ?

In the time honoured fashion, here is the trip my wife and i undertook last Nov-Feb Horizons Unlimited Motorcycle Travellers' Stories - Two Pegs to Patagonia A 3 month loop from Santiago.

But has been suggested, you could head south to Patagonia. But in my opinion, there is more to the north (yes there is Torres Del Paine and some glaciers, and the fjords and the Careterra Austral (which we will go back and do) )

However, the best route is the one *you* want to do. Decided what you want to visit, then join the dots. Sometimes the routes are limited, but worth it. Other times they are not, but have to be done to get where you want to go.

Cheers for the info, i'll look into it.

We were planning to buy a couple of bikes when we get there, probably some basic 125's and then sell them when we're finished, although we're not banking on this.

Thanks

we did the Carreterra Austral last year, and absolutely loved it. Check out my website, you'll find some cool pictures of it. (go to World trip - South America - Pictures South America).
Bolivia is fantastic too, Argentina we found a bit boring considering the riding, but we didn't really search for the best routes there too!

From BA, why not simply drive back to Santiago then to sell your bike? Yes, it is a boring drive through a lot of Soja, but will save you some $$ and it will always be easiest to sell the bike in the same country it is registered I reckon.
