I would like to hear from you with experiece.
This is mainly related to Argentina and Chile.

What about camping versus not?

Is it easy to find cheap accomondation? So no need to bring tent ?
Easy to find camping ? Did you use camping places or "wild camping"

Please share your own experiences.

I am used to always have a tent. I creats a freedom and flexibiliy.
But tent, sleeping bag and madrass ands to the luggage.

You can do wild camping everywhere! I have sleept everywhere in South America. When its possible sleep in gas stations, very good conditions and is for free. In Chile you even have place to take shower in the gas stations in the principal routes, you pay to shower but is really cheap.

So how much is cheap in your definition of cheap then? If youre not picky you should be able to find accomodation for around 10-15 USD in most locations. But that includes dorms in hostales, cheap Airbnb accomodation and often a bit away from city center and sightseing spots.
Camping is possible almost everywhere in Chile and Argentina, both on organised campsites and wildcamping and will of course be significantly cheaper than paying for a room/bed. Use iOverlander for places to find camp spots and accomodation. I used Airbnb a lot in southern and central America and found it the best and cheapest option in 80-90 % of the time when not camping.

What is a realistic budget for accommodation + food, when travelling in Chile and Argentina. Of course it depends on a lot.

Camping most of the time. Hostels and Airnb some times.
Mixing fixing breakfast, eating fruits and bread with a dinner in restaurant.
Living easy, but not use all effort on saving money.

(My first guess was 20 USD each per day)

I think it might sound a bit low. Maybe for Argentina it would be enough as the inflation there has been huge. But for Chile I doubt 20 UsD will be enough.

Yeah I often find (for some reason, I don't know why) that whatever your budget is, double it and it's often closer to the reality. In Bolivia $20 is doable. But as already said, Argentina and Chile unlikely, I was spending that much just for fuel in Chile.

I did not mean $20 per day in total.
What I meant with "each" was

$20 for accommodation (mainly tent that should be cheaper)
$20 for food
$10 for fuel

=> $50 per day for those type of "daily" things.

Than a budget for MC maintenance and misc...)

Do you think that is realistic ?

50 USD a day should be good everywhere in south-America for accomodation, food and fuel.

Yeah that's realistic. Even if you over spend in Chile and Argentina it will balance out the further north you go. In Peru Ecuador and Colombia I'm averaging about 30/35 usd a day, I'm mainly in hostels and I like a drink haha
