shipping 4wd france americaz

Hello
We go from france to central and south america in september for one year at least. we just bought a 1999 Toyota land cruiser hzj 75 with 96 000 kms.
we are preparing it ...
what would be the best place to ship it in central AND in south america ? for example, where there are little problems with customs, paperwork, etc ... and cheap.
any info about shipping welcome, even contacts if some have done it already :-)
thx, b. rgds, happy trails

Hi Vincent

the easiest way to get your J75 in South America is with Grimaldi RoRo. But travel on the same ship as than tha car is seen as handluggage instead of cargo. Saves you lots of hassle.
In Buenos Aires immigration and customs come on board of the ship and within no time you drive off board with the necessary permit.
I shipped my PZJ75 this way to (there is one leaving from Le Havre every 11 days)
When booking tell them your car is 200 cm high as you pay lots more when it is over 200. Told them I would deflate the tires and the suspension is old and sunken in blablabla.....Did not say there was a roofrack and rooftent on it ofcourse. They accepted and when going on board no one worries, they wont even know about the regulations of what altitide, length etc.

lookig for shipping agent buenos aires

yes, you re totally right. thanx
we don t want to travel on the boat with our car. too long. so the car will take the boat and we ll take the plane.
but yeah it s the easiest and maybe the cheapest (around : 1600 euro for the car + 1300 for the passenger cabin + nothing else). no paperwork almost, no hassle on arrival.

we ll ship our toyota land cruiser to buenos aires by boat from france in august 2008, arrival in BA in september 2008 (around 20 days). then we travel 1-2 years in latin america. we have a good reliable serious cheap shipping company here in france.
but once in BA we need also a good reliable serious cheap shipping company there to take out the car from the boat/container/harbour.
if you know anyone or if you had same experience, pls let us know.
apparently, even if a carnet de passges en douanes (CPD) is not compulsory in latin america, it helps a lot on shipping arrival in BA. do you confirm ?
apparently, car insurance is not compulsory everywhere. do you confirm ?

cheers, happy trails

Apart from the first time in 1986 I have never again used a CDP in the AMericas, Then it was compulsary still and already I could get around without using it. (will save you lots of trouble\money when the vehicle gets stolen if it isn´t stamped in). Some will ask if you have one, but when I say I don´t they just provide you with a form for tourist cars. For ARgentina you get a 8 month permission, Chile 6, the rest 3

Insurance is nowadays compulsary in the whole of south america although iwonn most places they won´t ask you to proof it.(except the Guyanas and Surinam at every border and Argentina and Peru by some policestops)

Bon voyage
