In the last year it has become almost impossible to legally do this, in Chile. Start thinking of selling it Uruguay. You can sell it in Argentina, but the gov puts a 50% tax on the THEIR APPRAISED VALUE of the bike, so you won't be able to sell it for much. Bolivia and Peru are other options but usually harder to find a buyer.

Best would be to just ask at random bike shops if they want a bunch of parts.

Or sell it to someone else from country the bike came from - this makes things easier. Again, don't expect to sell it for allot - there is still some paperwork that needs to be done and some border guards that need to be tricked.

ECU Lines has an office in Santiago. Maybe you might think about shipping it somewhere?

Suerte.

Storing in Argentina ?

Hi , well how do you get 9 months in Argentina ? when we ourselves only get 3 months , do you ask for 9 months when yu get to the border , or do you apply for an extension after the 3 months. how do you do this when your not in the country anymore ? cheers

You have to ask while at the border. Not sure about the rules. Crazy border guys gave me a year the second time I entered - which they are not supposed to do.

I went in to Argentina 4 times and out 3times in Jan. and Feb., every time got 9 months without asking. Just need to be back to get it out by Oct. 11.

Storage for those of us doing trips on the installment plan can be a real pain with short temp import rules. But what I found was that Argentina has the longest time so I stored there. Looks like my next stop for storage will be Panama.

Maybe Uruguay?

Erin and Chris Rattay told us that you can store a bike in Uruguay for 12 months. Might be worth checking into that. :mchappy:

Background: We had this discussion at Dakar Motos (Javier's shop) in Buenos Aires in late January 2009; they were making arrangements to store their BMW with friends in Argentina for 9 months, the Uruguay option was their contingency plan if they had been unable to make Argentina work for them.

Bike was stored in Uraguay !

Hi , well after entering Uraguay which was such a nice country ... I found a Kawisaki dealership in Ponte de este , which directed me to their storage facility guy , whom let me store my bike untill I come back for 50 usd per month , i entered thru Chuy, Brasil border tand they gave me a year in Uraguay without asking and it was not entered into a computor , just written up on apiece of paper. So would be easy to cahnge and sell . 5 days after entering the country i had the bike in safe dry storage and was on a plane home back to Canada , How cool is that !! cheers Ready for next year !
