Selling moto in Chile/Arg to another traveller - process please?

This has been covered, BUT there is no answer from those that have done it i think. If anyone has or knows the process of selling a moto to a fellow traveller (not illegally to a local) and it leaves the country before the moto expiry date in Chile or Argentina can they reply.

This question will help many

Thanks

Foreign Moto 1 tourist selling bike to Foreign Tourist 2

TSJourney. We are running this drill right now in Argentina. Please see my thread Buy/Tour/Sell in Argentina for the actual beta test of this and a similar process relating to re-titling the bike in the foreign country.

The following information is conjecture and not yet proven to be true,
but in the interest of time, (to give you a jump on what might have to be done before selling) we have discovered, want to share with you, the fact that much depends on where the bike is actually titled.

For example, if the bike is titled to Foreign Moto Tourist 1 (seller) name in the USA, it also depends if the individual State in which the bike is titled allows two owners with an "or" between the names of the two owners.

Some States mandate "and" between the two owners names. Some allow and/or between the two owners names. There might be other not yet discovered options for other States.

If Foreign Tourist 1 (seller) bike is titled in a State allowing "or" between the names of the two owners, it might be possible to contact the motor vehicle department of the State in which the bike is registered and have the Foreign Tourist 2 (buyer) name included a new title and registration for the bike and the new title and registration FED EX, UPS or DHL to you in Argentina. Of course, you will pay the cost of Title change plus mailing costs. Possibly by credit card, but maybe not? (Potential stop here)

Ok, let us assume that Foreign Moto Tourist 1 (seller) secures a new title for the bike from the State in which the bike has been re- titled with Foreign Tourist 2 name also now appearing on the new title and new registration

With new title and new registration, in hand, both Foreign Moto Tourist 1 and now foreign moto Tourist 2 might be able to go to a border of Argentina, have proper exit permit issued from Argentina to Foreign moto tourist 1 and 2 and after entering the neighboring country, might be able to obtain a temporary motor vehicle permit for that country in the name of Foreign Moto Tourist 2 only. This only possible if an "or" has been placed between names of Foreign Moto Tourist 1 and Foreign Moto Tourist 2 on the Title by the State in which th bike is registered.

Once Foreign Moto Tourist 2 has a temporary motor vehichicle permit in his or her name, he/she is legal to tour the neighboring country, and then obtain proper exit permit and secure a temporary motor vehicle permit for a 3rd, 4th 5th etc country.

In effect both seller and buyers name will be on the new title and registration with an "or" between the names and at any time the buyer can have the sellers name removed from the title.

CAUTION, THIS IS AN IDEA! It might or might not work!

Some USA motor vehicle departments might require Foreign Tourist 1 be present with ID to add Foreign Tourist 2 name to title with "or" between the names. Some might not.

A method for a foreign Moto Tourist to sell a foreign registered bike to another foreign moto tourist is currently being tested and the result will be posted soon on the Buy/Tour/Sell thread this region. Please remember the idea above is just an un tested idea, if it works please let us know...xfiltrate

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
