Santiago to Ushuaia, help with route needed
 

:helpsmilie:Can anyone give sound advice on best route planning from Santiago to Ushuaia for maximum scenery on interesting paved and reasonable condition unpaved roads considering fuel tank range of 200 km. Also, what info on "walk-on" passengers for Antarctic or similar cruise please.

Don´t know if it is too late. I did that trip in december 2004.
The route was:
Santiago - Mendoza (Arg) - Neuquén - San Martin de los Andes - Osorno (Chi) - Pto Montt - Chaiten (by ferry) - Cohcrane - Bajo Caracoles (Arg) - Calafate - (Perito Moreno) - Pto Natales (Chi) - Estrecho de Magallanes - Rio Grande (arg) - Ushuaia - Pto Natales - Pto Montt (in 3 day ferry) - Santiago.

Aconcagua is amazing. The carretera Austral is spectacular. It took one month.
Most of the carretera austral was gravel at that time, I don´t know now.
I strongly recommend it.:thumbup1:

I’m looking for best rider/pillion route Santiago to Ushuaia (and back). This response below from 2007 thread. Any comments from more recent times welcome?

The route you mentioned above seems to cut off the southern tip of the carretera austral which, to me, was the most beautiful part.
There are so many routes and ferry options that is impossible to tell which one might be the best.

I don’t know how much time you have at your disposal, but I’d like to share an experience from my trip that I did in December this year:

In 21 days I drove all the way from Santiago to Ushuaia. For the way home I decided to put my bike on a truck and didn’t regret this decision at all.

I used a company called Transportes Conosur http://www.transportesconosur.cl to send my bike from Punta Atenas back to Santiago. They only charged me 180.000 CLP and the bike arrived within one week. It is also possible to make connections to the Port in San Antonio and ship your bike back to Europe or USA for example.

I don’t hold shares of Conosur or something. I just found this service incredibly useful for people on a schedule or someone who doesn’t want to ride back the same way he just came from.

I do not know about the southern most pat.
And variants are many.
But one nice way is to use Carretera Austral South and RN 40 in Argentina North.
And add the soutern part to Ushuaia and Tierra de Fuego
