Santiago people, a little help please?
 

Hey guys, a few questions here.

I'm in Santiago looking for a a couple of bikes for me and my girlfriend, and we're planning to take them up north to Mexico and maybe more.

We are fairly thin (55kg and 65kg) and we are looking at a Yamaha TTR 250 and maybe a Suzuki DR 400.

I'm not an expert in motorbikes so i'd like to take the potential bikes to a good mechanic or repair shop, and have them inspected BEFORE we buy them.

1) So the question is, can you recommend a good reliable shop, or somebody? This is pretty important, as we have a long journey ahead and I don't want them falling apart on the way.

I'd also like to make some custom racks for our backpacks (about 30kilos on each bike). So if you have any tips on designs and places where we can make them, it would be highly appreciated.

2) The other problem is that the tanks for these bikes are kinda small (7-8L). Where/how can I change them? Or maybe some way to carry the extra gas?

3) Maybe this should've been the first question, but anyway. Is there a place in Chile where there are a lot of bikes to choose from, any they don't cost an arm and a leg, like they do here in Santiago? Maybe further south in Conception?

first of all i have to sort out my papers, i understand there are 3 documents required to first buy a bike here, and to export it from the country.

I believe one of the reasons bikes are cheaper further north and further south is due to a tax break. And it limits the time the bike can be in the middle. There are custom posts in strange out of the way places that seem to monitor this.

Sorry I just missed you, but will be back in Santiago next week.
There is a Suzuki dealer on Los Condes out to the east. RinoMoto.
The mecanic looks after my V-Strom (DL650), and that is hard work the way I ride:clap:. Tell them I sent you. The owner speaks a little English.
Copec do a 10 liter tank that you can buy. I didn´t need one in Chile, but Bolivia can be difficult.
I brought my bike over from the UK years ago and just move it around so have not had to buy one. But a few friends have brought bikes, and had the papers attested to make it legal.

check this website Argentina 2 Alaska on a motorbike the "how too section" tells you all the info and paperwork required on buying a motocycle here in chile, and some useful info on travelling north.

i hope to ride from here (santiago) to vancouver where i have family, soo, like i said if any of you want to meet up and go bike hunting it would be my pleasure, i cant pm any of you because i aint posted enough posts to validate a pm.

im also looking to buy something fairly new and reliable if not brand new so if your cruising the dealerships give me a shout im going to sort out a sim card right now and get a phone number arranged..

Very honest and competent, not the cheapest.
Specializes in motocross, enduro and adventure bikes. Wont touch a Chinese bike.

Forget about buying in a tax free zone.

There are lots of bikes on www,chileautos.cl, mostly private sales.
Most dealers keep few used bikes in inventory.
Most bikes are in Santiago. Outside of Santiago there will be far fewer, but not cheaper.

I know a guy with a Yamaha tenere I will send him a mail if you are interested. He is in Peru at the moment.

So a quick update, mostly for Mathew Burns.

After seeing avout 20 bikes from chileauto.cl, we chose two (an XL and a TTR) and we took them and the sellers to what looked like a respectable repair shop on Bilbao corner with Salvador.

The owner there was pretty awesome, he inspected the bikes, tild us what's wrong with each bike and how much it costs to fix, and even helped me bring down the price of one of the bikes. All in all, great chap.

Tomorrrow we'll meet with the owners of the bikes to finalize the paperwork. I think it's the trickiest part and anyone (mathew?) who wants to come and get acquainted with the process is welcome.

Great news I also found a Honda xr125 for a great price today and the dealer is even going to throw in a helmet for free. I have to head back there tomorrow to finalize paper work too and get plates registration. But I should be on road Wednesday so I really think u should pm me a time and place so we could take a ride or just a walk for a beer. Glad to hear uve sorted it all out there seems to be heaps of us riders down here and it's always nice to hear great stories and adventures!
