Road Abercay to Nazca Closed

As you will all know the road from Cuzco and to Nazca via Abercay has been upgraded and for most of the way is very good. We came through from Abercay on Thursday and from 25k to 50k West (towards the coast) the road is closed each day from 7am to 1pm and 2pm to 6pm. We arrived at 9am and was told to wait until 1pm, 4 hours. Fortunatley we were the only ones there and an Engineer working on the project also arrived, he told the security to let us through. 25k later we exited the blocked area to a line of vehicles waiting. The road to being blasted out. This job looks lengthy so try to time it right.

Despite trying to make the 2pm deadline yesterday (30 Jan), we failed miserably. Fortunately, it seems that they will let bikes though whenever they are not blasting. We only had to wait 20 mins before being waved on.

Without a bit of luck, it is impossible to cross the construction area in daylight. We were told the crews do not work on Sunday, and the road is open. We left Abancay Sunday morning, and found work being done in several places. There were some delays, but not too bad. While waiting, we confirmed the crews work until mid-day on Sunday, and the roads are completely open (unobstructed) for the remainder of the day.

So, you should be able to leave Cusco on Sunday morning, arrive in Abancay around lunchtime, then follow towards Nazca. The going may be slow, but you can make it to the next town (forgot the name) within a couple of hours, spend the night, and reach Nazca Monday afternoon....

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
