Peru/Bolivia border?
 

I'm currently in Peru and am wondering if there are any other routes around the border protests at Lake Titikaka? Is there a way over the border to the north of the lake?

I took the route on the north side of the lake a couple of years back, a nice adventurous route with an excellent photo opportunity when you get the the border - a piece of wire in the ground.

Get your papers sorted out in Puno with a passport stamp for the following day. I found it a bit tricky to track down the Aduana office.

There is cheap accommodation in Moho on the Peruvian side of the border. On the Bolivian side you will at the very least need to get a stamp from the police to say that you entered the country. I got mine in Puerto Acosta.

It was straight forward to get my entry visa sorted out in the center of La Paz but aduana was a bit more tricky. I had to find the aduana offices near the airport in El Alto. Officials there were instant that I should have visited aduana near the border but I have no idea in which town. If you're patient you'll get around this minor hic-up but be prepared to spend a few hours at the offices there.

All in all not as complicated as it sounds, very achievable and the dirt rounds on the other side of the lake weren't so bad. They were busy laying tarmac on the Bolivian side so I expect the conditions have improved since I was there.

I was stuck on the Bolivian side an ended up going into Chile through Arica and Arequipa. Amazing roads so well worth it. Was in Puno 3 days ago and the town is basically ****ed, got shot at with catapults and hit with sticks going through roadblocks from Juliaca.
Some people are making it through using the ferry, but there's no telling if it will get worse. Up to you if you want to risk it.

Son and I did the same ride, but going north in 2007. There IS a customs office on the left just as you crest the hill after leaving the center of Puerto Acosta (where the police stamped that you had passed that way). We did NO paperwork before leaving, and found NO CONTROL on the Peruvian side, so we illegally left and entered a country!

Not so much of a problem for us as the bikes are registered in Peru and we know the immigration people and they just stamped us in to the country a week later as if we had just arrived from Brazil!
