Penalty fee for expired TIP in Columbia

I'm going to visit Colombia in a few months as a part of my trans Americas trip (EU plates). I know I'll have to leave my bike for a couple of months (ca 6).
Does anybody know what is the amount of penalty fee for expired TIP when I'll cross the Col-Ecu border? Is is the fixed fee or the amout is increased every day?

In 2013 I wanted to get an extention on a TIP, that had expired for five months in Bogota. The fine for five months overstay was around 1000 Usd, so I dont have to tell you that I had to make other plans, as I could not get the extention without paying the fine.

Be careful with overstaying your TIP in any South American country, I have heard horror stories.

Brazil is the country to leave your bike for as long as you like, as they dont issue a TIP.

Pls check the spelling of the country ... Colombia is the country ... Columbia is somewhere else.

There is long term storage available "between the borders" of Colombia and Venezuela, just west of Maicao, La Guajira, Colombia... If you can get to it. I understand the border is currently closed, so I don't know if you can get to the place. I know a few people that stored motorcycle there at reasonable rates.

Otherwise, look for a 'bonded warehouse' in a port city or near an international airport. For a few dollars a day you should be able to store your motorcycle and 'stop the clock' on the TVIP.

Go and see the Aduana and ask about keeping it in bond. Countries which have import restrictions have bonding arrangements. We did this in Panama which has bond stores in Pan City and David. Our bike is currently in David and we pay US$1.00 a day. This is cheap for secure storage and a fully legal arrangement. And, the storage is very secure. They wouldn't even let me go back to the bike to disconnect the battery without a guard to watch what I did and an elaborate sign-in and out process.

Elsewhere on this site there are some horror stories about a couple who left their bike between Col and Ven. When the Madura govt closed the border it all turned to worms. Worth checking the post.

Yes they do so you can't. They didn't for a while but reverted early this year..

Ecuador supposedly $300 per day overstay the TIP. Peru said to be instant confiscation.

Colombia not Columbia :)

I don't know either. Try Google with the search term: almacen fiscal bogota colombia

I believe "almacen fiscal" translates from Spanish as "fiscal warehouse."

Being the nerd I am, I observed the comings and goings at the main border post between Colombia and Ecuador during the 2 crossings I did with a bike in June this year and it is my opinion that if you know what to do, it's easily possible to do immigration to leave Colombia and avoid visiting customs to check your bike out.

Then do customs and immigration upon entering Ecuador. Or just immigration. This will make things tricky if wanting to get the bike out of Ecuador at any southern border, but might suit you if you want to indefinitely park in Ecuador and fly out.

Myself and 2 other bike travellers I spoke with (we all travelled independently from each other: total combined distance in Colombia maybe 10.000km) were never stopped at any road block/papers check. Actually I lie, one traffic person somewhere north of Bogota tried to flag me down, but I didn't stop as I wouldn't have understood what he wanted from me, so I saved us both the hassle. The army have guns and are looking for "terrorists". The traffic cop: no comment. :innocent:

Summary: assuming the bike won't enter Colombia again, just ride out after doing immigration.
