can anyone advise? found a list of "carnet required" countries on the web - and it included Panama . . . .

No, no carnet req'd for Panama.

Any "carnet required" list is out of date the day it's posted - contact your carnet org in your country for the up-to-date list.

Note that a carnet hasn't been required in Panama in AT LEAST 15 years...
