A lot of countries are now adopting similar strategies. Often the visa charge will depend on how much your country charges them for entry.

True. In South America, Argentina follows Brazil, Bolivia and Chile to the list of countries charging North Americans to enter their country. It doesnt seem to be linked to the quality of relationships those countries have but only to the price their citizens have to pay to go to these countries.

For example, Chile has excellent relations with the USA, but do charge an entry fee, while Venezuela, wih Chavez evilizing that country, doesn t.

Just be warned before you go to Argentina that you have to take into account that additional cost in your budget.

This tax will take effect on December 20, 2009

Airport Entry Fee
December 11, 2009

This warden message is being issued to alert U.S. citizens that on December 20, 2009, the Government of Argentina will begin charging American Citizens visiting Argentina for business or tourism an entry fee of $131 U.S. dollars. The fee will be collected only at Buenos Aires Ezeiza International Airport. Once paid, the fee permits multiple entries into Argentina for ten years in accordance with United States visa reciprocity. Americans may pay in dollars, by credit card, or with travelers checks.

Just thought I would update this thread as I will soon be entering Argentina. I checked out the Aussie travellers government website and found this segment, so it is not as bad as it seems yet.

"From 28 December 2009, Australian tourists will be charged a “reciprocity fee” of USD100 on arrival at Ezeiza International Airport in Buenos Aires. At present the fee will only be collected at Ezeiza International Airport, however it will be extended to other international points of entry at a later date (still to be advised). There is no change in visa requirements for Australian citizens. Payments are made prior to clearing immigration controls and can be made by cash (Argentine pesos or US dollars), credit card or travellers’ cheques."

I will let you know if I get charged in a week or so

Cheers from Bolivia

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
