Need Info on Argentina/Pantagonia in 2010

Hello, new to HU, but not to Adventure riding. Looking for some info on a possible trip to Argentina/Pantagonia/Tierra del Fuego in early 2010. Of course, due to limited time(3-4 weeks) we would be required to hire bikes down south. We have a general idea of our routes, but was inquiring as to any suggestions on renting bikes, insurance, suggested routes etc. Not really looking for a guided tour with a chase truck, but if that is all that's available, we'll go that route. Any suggestions welcomed. Thanks

Hiring in Patagonia

Your question is very timely. I'm in Ushuaia. Got here just yesterday after riding from Canada.

On my way here, when I got to the ferry crossing at the Strait of Magellan, I met a group on a tour with Patagonia Rider Motorcycle Tours and Rentals . They invited me to join them for the rest of the way to Ushuaia.

Horacio, the guide (and also the manager of the company) is very knowledgeable about the area. We stopped at a couple of places along the way, spots I would not have found on my own. I thought I might be intruding but they all made sure I was welcome and even invited me to follow them to their hotel and then to dinner afterwards.

He has BMW's that they rent or he will take you on a guided tour. He has mostly the R1150GS but also the single F650GS. There's a support vehicle (van) that follows them on the guided tours. It carries the luggage, fuel and spares so you can concentrate on riding.

Usual Disclaimer: I have no interest in this company.

BA - Ushuaia - BA

In November 2008 we rode from BA across to the lakes then down Ruta 40 to Ushuaia, then back up to BA via Ruta 3. 9000km and 3 1/2 weeks. This might suit you. We had a local guide do much of the organising, Facundo Maldonado. I've started writing a trip report here:
There (Ushuaia) and back again - ADVrider

Cheers

Another Option in Punta Arenas

Another excellent option that I have just run across in Punta Arenas is with Anibal Vickacka and his new motorcycle adventure touring company, Patagonia Backroads out of Punta Arenas.

Anibal has just purchased 9 NEW BMWs (R1200GS, F800GS and F650GS) and will be conducting tours that include Tierra del Fuego, Ushuaia, Calafate, the Perito Moreno Glacier, the Torres del Paine National Park. Their support vehicles are Land Rover Defenders. How cool is that?

He is a great, honest guy. He will assist you with all aspects of your planning and tour. He is well respected in the community and very resourceful. He has travelled much of the world, knows what tourists want and knows how to treat people.

I'd definately check him out if you were planning on touring the Patagonia.
