i rented one in usulatan, and another in costa del sol, but these where only beach hoppers about 125´s. nothing bigger. a relation works for the local pilsener brewers in salvadore where they had a big raffle for a sportster. the man that won had the privilege to ride it for 45 minutes before it was stolen at gunpoint. elias had an older 500 cow that was also stolen shortly after purchasing. i don´t know much about touring thru the country, but do know it is a violent country. the worst place i have ever visited. i remember elias telling me that anything over a 125/250 is a risk. don´t be stopping for red lights at intersections my friend! if you are still interested, there is a pollo camparo(kfc version) across from the zocalo in usulatan. the bike rental/ tire repair taller is right next door. K

I take exception to BC Hombre's remarks.

Earlier this year I rode my bicycle all through El Salvador, from the Guatemala border through Metapan, Texistepeque, Nueva Concepcion, San Salvador, Cojutepeque, Sensuntepeque, across Rio Lempra and into Honduras. I did not see any criminal activity, I never felt threatened, and people were only friendly and helpful.

This dispite the fact that I was obviously a rich gringo riding a fancy bicycle alone through jeep trails and remote villages.

I would caution that CA 1 from San Salvador east to Cojutepeque is undergoing major reconstruction and will not be a very pleasant cruise until the project is completed.

experiences create lasting impressions. i have spent a total of 3 months living with my ex relations there, enough i feel to offer insight and warnings to fellow riders. this is a wonderful website that i have just recently discovered and i listen to others opinions, advice and experiences openly, realizing that we all can have two completely different journeys.i did not mention that i had a knife put to me in a crowded soyapango market in san salvadore in broad daylight, or that 2 of my workers are from this city. both refugees. one still has 2 bullets lodged in his head from an attack. my ex sister in law is a parapeligic now living in canada. she too has a bullet lodged in her spine that is too risky to remove. i´m glad you had a safe time and i agree with you that el salvadore has many wonderful people. many are my close friends relocated here in my hometown. my intent was not to offend. I agree with your last post. When I posted, I realized that different people are going to have different experiences in the same environment, but I wanted to counter your experiences with mine.

Of course, many big cities have big city crime and bad people can lurk almost anywhere, whether it is NYC, Chicago, Guate, or San Salvador. My mother's leg was amputated when a mugger threw her under a bus in NYC. She still lives in the city, and I feel safe walking or riding through NYC, even though I know there is a chance I could be attacked. I could also be attacked at my retail store here in big bucks Fairfield County CT, just as another storeowner down the street was shot and killed by a robber, and last week a neighboring storeowner was sent to the hospital by a group of sledgehammer-slinging robbers.
