Mexico Frontera Corozal / Bethel Guatemala Crossing

I´m in San Cristobal now and want to take the ferry cross to Guatemala. I have searched the site but can´t find any recent info.

Can I get all the paper work done in Frontera Corozal Mex to get my bike and me in to Guatemala? or do I need to get this done in Palenque or San Cristobal?

Any contacts and prices would be great...

Was the river crossing via boat worth the hassel?

Thanks
John

I thought the lancha crossing was pretty cool.
It was $40 for me and the bike, and $10 for the help loading and unloading.
The trip is about 30-40 min.

Customs in Bethel was quick, easy and charged nothing. They do not have paperwork for handling vehicles, but this wasn't a problem on my trip.

This is a good question as i'm planning the same rout in Jan. Does Frontera Corozal have the facilities (Aduana??) to remove the sticker from my bike and sign me out of Mexico? My bike will be about 6 months overdue in Mexico and i'm trying to find the easiest way out, minimum fines, etc.... Otherwise, does anyone have any sugestions on what boarder i should use to leave Mexico with the least ammount of hassle. Is crossong into Belize an option?
...sorry for the hijack

If I'm understanding you....

There is no fine for an expired permit if you present it for cancelation when re-entering Mexico 'with the same vehicle'. What the fine or cost is for an expired permit while in the country, I don't know.
You could leave Mex w/o presenting anything and then re-enter at say Belice/Mex near Chetumal....or La Mesilla.
Mex doesn't stop you (didn't me, anyway) when crossing into Belice (if you choose that exit), but if your passport has a Mex stamp, you will need to cancel it before Belice will allow entry. I wonder if you couldn't just ride into the 'free zone', turn around and re-enter Mex.
I've read that there is customs in Frontera Corozal, but I never saw it. Palenque supposedly has a customs office.
GT customs at La Mesilla gave me no grief for not having vehicle papers.

i did that crossing a couple of weeks ago and it is an adventure! however, there is no customs so depending where you are going next it might be a problem. i left guatemala to go into el salvador. i speak fluent spanish and i was stuck for 6 hours between the Guatemala and El Salvador border bc i didn´t have the documentation showing i brought the bike into guatemala. i know other people that have crossed into belize with little problems. i'm not planning to return to mexico so i didn´t give back the sticker. although i'm keeping all my documents for next time i come to the country i can show the bike was taken out. i have more details on the crossing and hassel on my site at www.salcar.net or feel free to send me an email to salcar at hotmail dot com

Mexico sticker

Poor idea, Salcar, plans have a way of changing. Do take the trouble to go for a short ride from Huntington Beach to the border with the vehicle to which the sticker applies and turn it in soon or before it expires. You will save yourself a lot of annoyance and delays later when eventually you will decide to go for a ride into Mexico again and may not have the same vehicle , only documents and no hard proof that you took the bike out of Mexico

There's no problem canceling the permit after it expires. I've done this maybe 3 times.
Showing the vehicle to which is was assigned is the key.

If you want to try something really interesting, go straight across the river for about $10 US for 2 bikes and riders(3yrs. ago) and have them haul your bike up the steep bank with a rope. Then drive the dirt rode to bethel and get your passport stamped. They won't give you a vehicle permit, that may or may not cause you problems when driving through Gautemala. I was stopped twice last time but had the permit, without it I think I would of got the shake down. I never went in that way but went out without any problems. Not recommended for those pretty bikes. - Dan

I agree it was a bad idea and plans change but there was no customs in bethel and the people that i talked to didn´t know where i should go to hand in the sticker... i'm keeping all documents showing the bike was imported into other countries hopefully i´ll be able to sort it out when it comes the time...

i also heard about just crossing the river and taking the road to bethel. it had been raining, i was alone with a loaded bike so i didn´t go for it. but i hear that´s the true adventure
